Jamie Carragher has identified the two key signings Arsenal must make this summer to avoid being 'always going to be at a disadvantage' in Europe. The former Liverpool defender believes Mikel Arteta needs 'big upgrades' at centre-forward and left wing to compete for the Champions League.
Arsenal's Mixed Emotions After Champions League Final Defeat
Arsenal ended their 22-year Premier League title drought this month, finishing seven points clear of Manchester City. However, the Gunners missed out on a historic double after losing to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties in the Champions League final. Kai Havertz scored early, but PSG equalized through Ousmane Dembele before Eberechi Eze and Gabriel Magalhaes missed in the shootout.
Despite the disappointment, Arsenal fans are set to celebrate the Premier League triumph with a parade in north London. Yet questions remain about the team's attacking quality, even after Viktor Gyokeres' £64 million arrival from Sporting last summer.
Carragher's Verdict on Arsenal's Attack
Speaking on Sky Sports News, Carragher said: 'That's always been the criticism of Arteta's Arsenal. PSG weren't great in the first half, but Arsenal couldn't keep the ball. They don't have enough quality in attack.' He praised defenders William Saliba and Gabriel as 'outstanding' but highlighted the disparity in attacking quality as 'night and day'.
'Arsenal are fantastic at defending their box, but they need better attackers to fulfill their potential,' Carragher added. 'The centre-forward and left wing positions need big upgrades if they're going to win the Champions League.'
Summer Spending Needed
Carragher believes Arsenal's Premier League triumph could trigger a big summer of spending. 'Gyokeres hasn't quite worked out,' he noted. 'Without upgrades, they'll always be at a disadvantage against Europe's best.'
Arsenal face a crucial transfer window to build on their domestic success and challenge for European glory.
