Cardiff City's Compensation Bid Over Emiliano Sala's Death Dismissed by French Court
In a significant legal setback, Cardiff City has lost its compensation claim against French club Nantes regarding the tragic plane crash that killed footballer Emiliano Sala in January 2019. The French court ruled against the Welsh club, which had sought over £100 million in damages for alleged negligence connected to the fatal incident.

Cardiff contended that Nantes was responsible because they enlisted agent Willie McKay, whose son Mark McKay represented Sala, to arrange the flight. In 2021, David Henderson, who arranged the flight, was convicted of endangering aircraft safety and sentenced to 18 months in prison. He had hired Ibbotson, who lacked a commercial licence, night-flying qualification, and an expired rating for the Piper Malibu aircraft.
An inquest revealed that Sala likely lost consciousness due to carbon monoxide poisoning from a faulty exhaust system. While Sala's body was recovered weeks after the crash, Ibbotson's remains have never been found.
