Nicky Butt Urges Manchester United to Sell £55m Mason Mount Due to Injuries
Butt: Man Utd Must Sell £55m Mount Due to Injury Woes

Nicky Butt Calls for Manchester United to Offload Mason Mount

Former Manchester United midfielder Nicky Butt has publicly advised his old club to sell Mason Mount during the upcoming summer transfer window. Butt's comments come as Mount, who joined United in a high-profile £55 million transfer from Chelsea in 2023, has been plagued by injuries throughout his tenure at Old Trafford.

Mount's Struggles at Old Trafford

The 27-year-old English midfielder has managed only 10 starts in the Premier League this season, with a mere two substitute appearances under manager Michael Carrick. This limited playing time highlights the significant impact of his fitness issues on his contributions to the team.

Butt expressed admiration for Mount's footballing talent but emphasized the practical necessity of moving him on. 'He's a fantastic footballer, I'm a big fan of him when he's fit,' Butt stated in an interview with Paddy Power. 'On his day, he's a real top, top footballer and one that would suit Man United's way of playing.'

He continued, 'I love him when he's playing well and he was brilliant when he played at Chelsea. But he's just not fit.'

The Financial and Sporting Rationale

Butt pointed to the substantial £55 million investment United made in Mount and the disappointing return due to his injury record. 'He's been there nearly three years, I find it hard having to pop at people who have been injured. But when you look at what's the input – £55 million – and what's the output, especially when it comes to renewing contracts. You can't keep these lads.'

'You've just got to move them on. It's sad but they have to,' Butt asserted. 'United need players that they can rely on, especially at the moment.'

Broader Recruitment Needs for United

Beyond the Mount situation, Butt believes Manchester United require at least five new signings this summer to compete effectively. He specifically mentioned the need for two central midfielders among other positions.

'The biggest issue next season is they will be in Europe, no doubt about it,' Butt said. 'The big picture is the recruitment. They've got a massive job.'

He outlined the scale of the challenge: 'If you're looking to try and get straight back into competing in the Champions League, to get into the late stages of the FA Cup and then challenge for the Premier League, they need a lot.'

Butt's shopping list includes:

  • Two centre-backs
  • Two central midfielders
  • A top centre-forward
  • Possibly a right-back

He stressed that recruitment is paramount regardless of who is in the managerial seat. 'It doesn't matter if they give Michael the job, even if they got Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp, they still need to get the recruitment right or they're going to fail.'
