Bruno Fernandes Recommends £42m Midfielder to Man Utd

Bruno Fernandes has recommended the signing of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes to Manchester United’s hierarchy, according to reports. The Portuguese playmaker has urged the club to move for his namesake and compatriot as the Red Devils prepare for a summer overhaul of their midfield options.

Midfield Targets

United are in the market to sign at least one new central midfielder in the summer transfer window, with Casemiro set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season when his contract expires. Several options are being considered by the club, including Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, Brighton’s Carlos Baleba, and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali.

According to The Telegraph, Mateus Fernandes is also on United’s midfield shortlist, and the 21-year-old could be available for a cut-price fee if West Ham are relegated from the Premier League this season.

Bruno’s Influence

The report adds that Bruno Fernandes has ‘talked up his namesake and compatriot’s credentials’ to United’s recruitment team. Mateus Fernandes earned his first call-up to Portugal’s senior squad last month and made his debut appearance as a substitute for Bruno Fernandes during a 2-0 friendly win against the United States.

West Ham signed Mateus Fernandes from Southampton last summer in a deal worth £38m plus £4m in add-ons. He still has four years remaining on the contract he signed with West Ham in last summer’s transfer window. Fernandes joined Sporting CP’s academy as a schoolboy but made just 10 appearances for the Portuguese club before his £15m move to Southampton in 2024.

Season Performance

So far this season, Fernandes has scored four goals and registered three assists in 35 appearances for West Ham. His form has caught the attention of United’s scouts, and with Bruno Fernandes’s backing, a move could materialize if the Hammers fail to avoid relegation.
