In a stunning turn of events, Austria and Algeria played out a 3-3 draw in their final World Cup Group J clash on a humid night at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. The result saw both teams advance to the knockout rounds for the first time since 1982 for Austria and 2014 for Algeria, while eliminating Iran, who were left heartbroken after a late equalizer denied them progression.
Match drama unfolds in final seconds
The match featured wild swings of momentum, with Austria taking the lead three times only for Algeria to equalize each time. The most dramatic moment came in added time: Riyad Mahrez scored for Algeria in the 93rd minute, seemingly securing a 3-2 win that would have sent Iran through. However, with practically the last action of the match, Austria's Sasa Kalajdzic headed home a desperate cross to make it 3-3, shattering Iran's hopes.
"I couldn't believe what happened in [the last] 120 seconds. I don't even remember a match that had such a dramatic course," Austria manager Ralf Rangnick said. "At the beginning of the match, if anyone had said that it would be 3-3, nobody would have believed that. Somebody would have won an incredible bet."
Algeria and Austria show fighting spirit
Despite pre-match fears of collusion—dubbed a potential "Disgrace of Kansas City" referencing the 1982 "Disgrace of Gijón"—both teams played with intensity. Algeria manager Vladimir Petkovic said, "It was football that won. 3-2, [then] 3-3 says it all. There was a great will to win."
Marko Arnautovic opened the scoring for Austria in the 28th minute, finishing a pinpoint long ball from David Alaba. Algeria equalized through Rafik Belghali after a bizarre sequence involving a corner flag and a tackle reminiscent of NFL plays. Austria regained the lead in the 55th minute through Marcel Sabitzer, but Riyad Mahrez equalized again in the 60th minute with a similar cutback finish.
Late goals decide fate
After a period of passive play, Algeria took the lead through Mahrez in the 93rd minute, sparking celebrations. However, Kalajdzic's header in the 96th minute secured the draw. "I need to be pinched, to wake up from a dream," Kalajdzic said.
The result means Austria advance to the knockout stage for the first time since 1982, while Algeria return to the last 16 for the first time since 2014. Iran, who had already completed their group matches, were eliminated despite only needing a winner in this match.
