Arsenal Eye £10m Celtic Star Maeda as Alternative to £44m Guirassy
Arsenal target £10m Celtic star Maeda over Guirassy

Arsenal are reportedly exploring an unexpected transfer move for Celtic's Japanese international Daizen Maeda as a cost-effective alternative to Borussia Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy.

Why Arsenal Need Striker Reinforcement

Despite Viktor Gyokeres making a positive impact since his arrival at the Emirates, scoring six goals in 14 appearances, manager Mikel Arteta recognises the need for additional firepower. With Gabriel Jesus potentially departing in January and Kai Havertz struggling to adapt to the forward role, securing adequate support for the Swedish striker has become a priority.

The physical presence of Gyokeres has already benefited attacking partners like Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Leandro Trossard, but Arsenal's thin squad depth demands reinforcement.

The £44m Guirassy Alternative

While the Gunners have been linked with activating Serhou Guirassy's £44 million release clause at Borussia Dortmund, a more strategic option has emerged from the Scottish Premiership. Celtic's Daizen Maeda, who scored an impressive 33 goals and provided 12 assists in 51 games last season, represents a significantly cheaper alternative at around £10 million.

The 28-year-old Japanese forward has demonstrated his capability against elite opposition, registering four goals and one assist in nine Champions League appearances last campaign. His frustration at playing out of position on the right wing this season, combined with several blocked transfer attempts by Celtic's board, has created an opportunity for Premier League clubs.

Maeda's Unique Qualities

What makes Maeda particularly appealing to Arsenal is his contrasting profile to Gyokeres. While not possessing the same physical stature, the Celtic forward brings exceptional pace and relentless pressing energy that could offer Arteta a different tactical option.

Maeda maintains his aggressive, high-intensity approach from the first minute to the 90th, making him a nightmare for opposition defenders whether deployed through the middle or on the wing. His Champions League performances prove he can compete against Europe's best defences.

Arsenal aren't alone in their interest, with Everton, Leeds United, West Ham, and Wolves all monitoring the situation according to TEAMtalk. Maeda's recent transfer request and public comments about his positional dissatisfaction suggest he's ready to leave Celtic Park.

The forward expressed his frustration while on international duty, telling The Herald: "Right now with Celtic, I'm playing in a position that's not my natural position on the team, on the right wing."

With Celtic's sale of Kyogo Furuhashi setting a precedent for their valuation of Japanese talent, Arsenal could secure a proven goalscorer for a fraction of Guirassy's cost, providing both competition for Gyokeres and a different attacking dimension for the Premier League run-in.
