Arsenal kicked off their Premier League title defence with a commanding 3-0 victory over newly-promoted Coventry City at the Emirates Stadium on August 21, 2026. Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard secured the win, with the champions dominating from start to finish.
Arsenal take control early
The Gunners took the lead in the 15th minute through Havertz, who swept home from close range after a low cross from Riccardo Calafiori. The goal came after summer signing Christos Tzolis pressed Coventry defender Milan van Ewijk into a mistake, allowing Calafiori to set up the German international.
Arsenal doubled their advantage in the 23rd minute when Saka fired into an empty net after Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only push out a low cross from Tzolis. The Greek winger, making his league debut for Mikel Arteta's side, was involved in both opening goals.
Odegaard seals the win
Odegaard added a third goal in the 49th minute, scuffing his effort past a helpless Rushworth after Ben White cut the ball back to him. The goal effectively ended any hopes of a Coventry comeback, with the visitors struggling to contain the hosts throughout.
Arsenal dominated possession, with 71% of the ball over a 15-minute spell in the first half. The champions created numerous chances, with Declan Rice, Odegaard, and Calafiori all going close before the break.
Coventry's first top-flight match since 2001
Coventry, managed by Frank Lampard, were playing their first top-flight encounter since 2001. Midfielder Jack Rudon recovered from injury but was only fit enough for a place on the bench. The Sky Blues had a brief spell of pressure in the first half, with Tchaouna's acrobatic effort landing on the roof of the net.
Arsenal were without William Saliba and Jurrien Timber in defence due to longer-term injuries. Bruno Guimaraes was also absent after picking up a minor knock in the Community Shield.
