Violence erupts after final whistle
Thousands of fans gathered in the Argentine capital to watch the match, hoping to see Lionel Messi retain the trophy. Spain secured a 1-0 victory with goals from Enzo Fernandez and Ferran Torres in extra time. After the final whistle, tensions escalated on the pitch as Argentina's Leandro Parades was sent off for shoving Spain's Eric Garcia, according to the Daily Star.
In Buenos Aires, the atmosphere turned violent around 11:45 pm local time, reported Argentine newspaper Infobae. A large group of supporters attempted to breach fencing protecting the Obelisk, a national monument where major celebrations are held.
Police response and casualties
Fans began hurling glass bottles and other projectiles at police, prompting officers to use tear gas and a water cannon. The chaos lasted about 20 minutes. Infobae reported that at least 15 people were detained, and several were injured, though their conditions remain unknown.

National holiday announced
Despite the loss, President Javier Milei declared a national holiday for the team's achievement, stating on X: "Given the concern about the celebrations for the achievement reached by the Argentine National Team, I inform the population that, depending on what the players and the technical staff decide regarding the day to celebrate, it will be declared a national holiday."
Argentina had previously enjoyed a bank holiday after winning the 2022 World Cup, when players returned to Buenos Aires for a parade centered around the Obelisk.
