Kimi Antonelli takes stunning pole for British Grand Prix at Silverstone
Antonelli secures pole for British GP at Silverstone

Kimi Antonelli swept to a majestic pole position for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, demonstrating precision driving and commitment on the high-speed circuit. The 19-year-old Italian, who leads the world championship, held off Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, with a time of 1 minute 28.111 seconds.

Antonelli's Dominant Performance

Antonelli, who also won the sprint race on Saturday, had almost two-tenths of a second advantage over Leclerc in second and three-tenths over Hamilton in third. His Mercedes teammate George Russell could only manage fourth, nearly four-tenths back. Antonelli beamed after the session, praising the crowd's positive energy. "This weekend is probably one of the most special, alongside Monza, because the crowd is amazing," he said. "It's incredible to see how much support there is for everyone. Of course for Lewis in particular but he's kind of the legend here. No, actually he is the legend here."

Hamilton's Challenges

Hamilton, disappointed, revealed he had a problem with energy deployment and understeer. He was not optimistic about Ferrari's chances on Sunday, having been chased down and easily passed by Antonelli in the sprint race. Hamilton said, "I had a problem with my energy deployment and understeer, so second row was as much as I could expect."

Mercedes' Continued Dominance

Antonelli and Mercedes have remained unbeaten in qualifying this season, despite Ferrari's early pace. Antonelli has now taken five poles from nine races and has five wins, strengthening his title favourite status. He leads Russell by 43 points and Hamilton by 47 in the championship.

Russell's Incident

Russell had a difficult session, locking up and going off during Q1 at Luffield, hitting the wall. He returned to the pits with front damage but continued after repairs. He was mystified by the incident: "That was very weird. I've never locked up there in my whole career." He also suffered from a straightline speed deficit he could not explain.

McLaren's Struggles

McLaren had an unproductive weekend at their home race. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri could only manage sixth and eighth, struggling for grip. Leclerc took the top spot early but was pipped by Hamilton, before the Mercedes pair proved to have the edge. Antonelli improved in the middle and final sectors, showing huge commitment.

Final Showdown

In the final runs, Antonelli went out first and improved his time, while Hamilton went out last but could not match him. Leclerc also improved but remained second. Antonelli's pole time was 1:28.111, with Hamilton three-tenths back and Russell relegated to fourth. Max Verstappen qualified seventh for Red Bull.

Antonelli's first Silverstone pole may not have pleased the home crowd, but it was a performance that suggested more will follow. The Italian remains favourite for the title with a commanding lead.
