Antonelli wins sprint, qualifying underway
Kimi Antonelli won the sprint race at the British Grand Prix on Saturday, narrowly defeating Lewis Hamilton in a fierce battle at Silverstone. The Mercedes driver took his first F1 sprint win, adding to his five race victories this season. The sprint result extended Antonelli's championship lead to 179 points, ahead of Russell (136) and Hamilton (132). Norris sits fourth with 85 points, while Max Verstappen is seventh on 76.
Qualifying updates: Russell crash, Q1 eliminations
Qualifying began at 4pm BST with Q1. George Russell suffered a crash early in the session, hitting a kerb and damaging the floor of his car. He managed to return to the pits for repairs and later posted the fifth-fastest time. The Q1 drop zone included Esteban Ocon, Valtteri Bottas, Franco Colapinto, Sergio Perez, Lance Stroll, and Fernando Alonso.
Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton both set 1:29s early, while Oliver Bearman managed a 1:31. Liam Lawson went second fastest, and Lando Norris wound up 11th, causing concern among his fans.
Sprint race details and driver reactions
In the sprint, Antonelli described the race as "very fun," adding, "When I got into overtake I knew my chance was coming … I used everything I had." Hamilton thanked the crowd and noted the challenge: "Tough race to keep the Mercedes behind. Big headwind coming down the straight … Once he got the overtake mode … I knew he was coming." Norris called it a "very good race" and said he was "pleasantly surprised."
The sprint points were: Antonelli 8, Hamilton 7, Norris 6, Russell 5, Leclerc 4, Verstappen 3, Piastri 2, and Lawson/Hadjar 1. Lawson faced a stewards' investigation for a late move on Isack Hadjar.
Title race context and fan dynamics
Norris, the reigning world champion, joked about his fan stand at Stowe corner, which holds 16,000 fans. When asked about Russell's desire for a similar stand, Norris retorted, "He can do what he wants, but he is certainly not taking any of my seats." The lighthearted exchange highlighted the competitive yet friendly rivalry among British drivers.
Qualifying continues with Q2 and Q3, setting the grid for Sunday's main race. The top contenders for pole include Antonelli, Hamilton, Russell, Verstappen, and Leclerc.
