Amorim's Change of Heart on Casemiro Future

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reportedly softened his stance on midfielder Casemiro's future at the club, with discussions now underway about a potential contract extension. The Brazilian international, who appeared destined for an Old Trafford exit last summer, has dramatically revived his United career this season under the Portuguese manager's guidance.

From Exit Door to Key Player

Casemiro joined Manchester United from Real Madrid in 2022 for a substantial £70 million transfer fee, but his future at the club looked increasingly uncertain after falling down the pecking order last season. The 33-year-old started just 18 Premier League matches during the previous campaign, prompting widespread speculation about his departure.

Despite significant interest from Saudi Arabian clubs during the summer transfer window, Casemiro remained at United and has since become an integral part of Amorim's midfield setup. The Brazilian has started nine of United's 11 league matches this season, forming a dependable partnership with captain Bruno Fernandes in the centre of the park.

His impact on the team's defensive solidity has been particularly notable. Statistics reveal that only five of the 20 league goals United have conceded this season occurred while Casemiro was on the pitch, highlighting his continued importance to the side's structure.

Contract Complications and Wage Demands

While United hold an option to trigger an automatic 12-month extension to Casemiro's current deal, which expires at the end of this season, the club faces a significant financial decision. Activating this clause would require continuing to pay the midfielder's current salary, which exceeds £300,000 per week.

This substantial wage commitment presents a dilemma for United's hierarchy, particularly given Casemiro will turn 34 next year. Any contract extension would likely require the Brazilian to accept reduced terms, aligning his earnings more closely with the club's current wage structure and financial sustainability goals.

When questioned about his future while on international duty with Brazil, Casemiro offered measured responses about his career plans. 'Football is my life, right? So it's inevitable that I'll stay involved somehow,' he told Brazilian outlet Globo. 'But I think my wife and family will want some time for themselves too.'

The experienced midfielder emphasised his focus on short-term objectives, stating: 'I'm someone who believes in planning, but I like to set short-term goals. Of course, it's inevitable to think about reaching the next World Cup in good shape, but I can't expect to even be there if I'm not doing well at Manchester United first.'

Amorim's Cautious Approach

Manager Ruben Amorim has remained deliberately vague when discussing contract situations, applying the same cautious approach to both Casemiro and defender Harry Maguire, whose deals also expire next summer.

'Yeah, we don't know what is going to happen,' Amorim recently admitted. 'My goal is to continue to count on Casemiro, with Harry Maguire, that he has the same problem. I don't know what is going to happen.'

The United boss did acknowledge Casemiro's importance to his current plans, adding: 'Let's focus on this season. I'm really happy with Casemiro, he is really important. I'm really happy with Harry, but I know what you guys are asking, let's focus on this season and then we'll see the next season.'

The situation represents a remarkable turnaround for a player who seemed certain to leave Manchester United just months ago. Casemiro's resurgence under Amorim has not only secured his immediate future at the club but potentially extended his stay at Old Trafford beyond what many considered possible.
