Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has issued a stark and uncompromising defence of his decision to consistently leave Kobbie Mainoo out of his starting line-up, as reports emerge that the young England midfielder is now 'deeply frustrated' and seeking a January loan move.
Amorim's Unwavering Selection Policy
Ahead of United's Premier League trip to Wolves on Monday, Amorim was questioned on Mainoo's continued absence from the first eleven. The 20-year-old has not started a single league game this season, with his only start coming in the Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town. He was also an unused substitute in Thursday's draw with West Ham.
Amorim bluntly stated that Mainoo's status as an England international would not influence his team selections. 'I just want to win,' the United boss said. 'I try to put the players, I don't look who it is, I don't care about that, I'm just trying to put the best players on the pitch.'
When asked if the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations, which could deprive United of other midfielders, might present an opportunity for Mainoo, Amorim remained non-committal. 'I don't know what is going to happen. It depends, I've seen the training, if it's the best thing for the team, I will put [him in],' he explained, showing clear irritation at the repeated line of questioning.
Mainoo's Growing Frustration and Loan Desire
According to a report from The Athletic, Mainoo's patience has worn thin. The academy graduate, who has played 82 times for the club, is now said to be 'deeply frustrated' by his peripheral role and wishes to secure a temporary departure when the transfer window reopens in January.
However, the club is likely to delay any final decision until after the Africa Cup of Nations concludes on January 18. United are wary of potential injuries to other squad members during the tournament in Morocco, which could suddenly alter their midfield requirements.
It is believed that, should he leave, Mainoo would prefer a move abroad. German giants Bayern Munich are among the clubs to have registered past interest in the talented midfielder.
Scholes Launches Scathing Criticism
The situation has drawn fierce criticism from Manchester United legend Paul Scholes, who accused Amorim of damaging the youngster's career. In a since-deleted Instagram story, Scholes launched a passionate defence of the homegrown talent.
'The kid is being ruined, not being played in a team that can't control a game of football,' Scholes wrote. 'Hate seeing home grown players leave but it's probably best for him now, enough is enough.'
Mainoo was linked with an exit last summer but ultimately remained at Old Trafford. With the January window approaching and his first-team prospects under Amorim looking bleak, the pressure is mounting for a resolution that benefits both the player's development and the club's turbulent season.
