Afcon 2025: Nigeria Edge Tanzania 2-1 as Senegal Thrash Botswana 3-0
Afcon 2025: Nigeria and Senegal Secure Opening Wins

The 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicked off with dramatic action as former champions Nigeria and Senegal both secured victories, but in contrasting fashion. Nigeria laboured to a 2-1 win over Tanzania in a rain-soaked Group C encounter in Fes, while Senegal, the 2021 winners, dominated Botswana 3-0 in Tangier with Nicolas Jackson starring.

Nervy Start for Nigeria in Group C

Nigeria, the tournament's silver medallists last time out, were made to work hard for their three points against a resilient Tanzania side. Despite controlling possession and creating numerous chances, the Super Eagles were plagued by wastefulness in front of goal. An early opportunity saw Victor Osimhen round the goalkeeper, only for his effort to be cleared off the line.

The breakthrough finally came after 36 minutes. Semi Ajayi powered home a precise header from Alex Iwobi's cross to give Nigeria a deserved lead. However, their advantage was short-lived after the break. Tanzania equalised just five minutes into the second half when Charles M'Mombwa beat the offside trap and finished expertly on the volley from Novatus Miroshi's cross.

Nigeria's response was immediate and spectacular. Ademola Lookman restored the lead just two minutes later, twisting away from his marker before unleashing a stunning 25-yard strike that arrowed into the far corner. Tanzania pushed for a second equaliser late on, coming agonisingly close when Kelvin John just failed to connect with a cross in front of an empty net.

Senegal and Jackson Begin Title Defence in Style

In Tangier, Senegal signalled their intent to challenge for the title once again with a commanding performance. They broke down a stubborn Botswana defence after 40 minutes, with Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson converting Ismail Jakobs' low cross to open the scoring.

Jackson doubled his tally just before the hour mark, showing quick feet to finish from close range after a pass from Ismaïla Sarr. Senegal, who registered a remarkable 28 efforts on goal, capped a dominant display with a late third from substitute Cherif Ndiaye. The victory puts Senegal top of Group D on goal difference after the first round of matches.

DR Congo Join Senegal at the Summit

The Democratic Republic of Congo joined Senegal on three points in Group D after a 1-0 win over Benin. Théo Bongonda scored the only goal in the 16th minute, volleying home after the Benin defence hesitated. DR Congo thought they had a second after half-time through Cédric Bakambu, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a lengthy VAR review.

The opening matches set the stage for a compelling tournament, with favourites Senegal looking formidable and Nigeria showing they can grind out results even when not at their fluent best.
