South Africa complete 408-run Test thrashing of India

South Africa's cricket team has delivered a stunning performance to complete a comprehensive 2-0 Test series sweep against India, securing a massive 408-run victory in the second Test at Guwahati.

Harmer's Heroics Decimate Indian Batting

Off-spinner Simon Harmer produced a magnificent bowling display, claiming six wickets for just 37 runs to dismantle India's batting lineup on the final day. Chasing an improbable target of 549 runs, the hosts were bowled out for 140 during the second session, with only Ravindra Jadeja offering meaningful resistance with a fighting 54.

The victory was set up by South Africa's commanding first innings total of 489, followed by a declaration at 260-5 in their second innings. India had struggled throughout, managing only 201 in their first response before collapsing completely in their final chase.

Record-Breaking Fielding Performance

Aiden Markram created history during the match, taking a record nine catches for the reigning world Test champions. His exceptional fielding performance provided crucial support to the bowlers throughout both Tests, with South Africa having won the opening match in Kolkata inside three days.

"It's a great feeling, a great effort by everyone to be fair," Markram said after the match. "As a group, you've got to believe that you can compete against the best in their backyard and get into the battle and see where it gets you... bloody proud of the team."

India's Final Day Collapse

Beginning the final day needing to bat out three sessions to salvage a draw, India's hopes quickly faded as their overnight batters struggled from the outset. Although Sai Sudharsan received a life when caught behind off a no-ball from Marco Jansen, and Kuldeep Yadav benefitted from a rare dropped catch by Markram, the reprieves proved temporary.

Harmer returned to deliver a devastating two-wicket over, clean bowling Kuldeep with a skiddy arm-ball before inducing an edge from Dhruv Jurel that Markram comfortably held. Rishabh Pant, leading India in the absence of injured captain Shubman Gill, attempted counter-attack by hitting spinner Keshav Maharaj for a four and six, but his aggression proved short-lived.

Markram took another excellent catch to remove Pant, who lunged forward to defend a Harmer delivery that caught the shoulder of the bat. Spinner Senuran Muthusamy eventually ended Sudharsan's 139-ball defiance, and India's last hopes disappeared when Maharaj had Jadeja stumped.

Harmer's series tally of 17 wickets earned him the player-of-the-series award, capping a remarkable individual performance. Reflecting on the defeat, Indian captain Pant acknowledged: "As a team we need to get better and you have to give credit to the opposition because they played better than us."
