Sam Konstas Loses Cricket Australia Contract After Form Decline
Cricket Australia has announced its 21-man contract list for the busy 2026-27 season, with notable omissions including young batter Sam Konstas and veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. The decision comes as selectors reward Ashes-winning players while making tough calls on underperforming talent.
Konstas Pays Price for Post-Debut Struggles
Sam Konstas, who burst onto the international scene with a memorable Boxing Day Test debut against India in 2024, has been dropped from the national contract roster after failing to build on his early promise. The 20-year-old batter scored a fearless 60 in his debut innings at the MCG but managed only 103 additional runs across nine subsequent Test innings, averaging a disappointing 16.30.
His inability to convert starts in Sheffield Shield cricket ultimately led to his exclusion from Wednesday's contract announcement. Despite this setback, chair of men's national selectors George Bailey emphasized that Konstas remains in Australia's long-term plans.
Bailey: "Door Not Shut" on Konstas
George Bailey insisted that selectors maintain strong interest in Konstas's development, stating, "Nothing's really changed in terms of the fact that the man is on a journey. Is he highly talented? Yes. Is he on a journey to become a complete and better player? Yes, as all players are."
Bailey noted positive signs toward the end of the season, with Konstas consistently getting starts after early technical adjustments. "He remains a player that we're incredibly interested in," Bailey confirmed, highlighting potential inclusion in Australia A's upcoming tour to India.
New Faces and Retained Players
Paceman Brendan Doggett earned his first national contract following his Ashes Test debut against England in Perth last November. Meanwhile, opener Jake Weatherald retained his upgraded contract despite averaging just 22.33 during the Ashes series.
Bowler Michael Neser and spinner Todd Murphy received full contracts ahead of a demanding Test schedule. The upcoming season features a two-match home series against Bangladesh in August, followed by ODI tours to Zimbabwe and South Africa, a home white-ball series against England, and a grueling stretch of 10 Test matches in 14 weeks against New Zealand, India, and England.
Weatherald's Position and Future Prospects
Bailey clarified that Weatherald's contract indicates selectors' confidence rather than guaranteeing his opening position for the Bangladesh series. "He's the incumbent in that role," Bailey said, noting Weatherald's consistent first-class performances and technical improvements since the Ashes.
"We'll have a month-long opportunity for camps up in Brisbane in the lead-up to those Top End Tests," Bailey explained. "He'll be a part of those as will a large number of players, just knowing that we'll need some depth around all positions really across that period."
Contract Changes and Retirements
Alongside Konstas and Maxwell, pace bowlers Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson, along with batter Matt Short, lost their national contracts. Usman Khawaja was absent from the list following his retirement from international cricket.
The full list of contracted players includes Xavier Bartlett, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Brendan Doggett, Nathan Ellis, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Matthew Kuhnemann, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Todd Murphy, Michael Neser, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Jake Weatherald, Beau Webster, and Adam Zampa.
