England 2-1 Norway: World Cup quarter-final player ratings

Norway player ratings

Orjan Håskjold Nyland – 3. Norway’s hero against Brazil will have nightmares about his error that handed Bellingham his second goal.

Julian Ryerson – 8. Struggled to contain Gordon, but loves bombing forward. O’Reilly looked relieved when he was forced off.

Kristoffer Ajer – 7. The Brentford defender made some brilliant blocks and was almost the hero when he hit the bar.

Torbjørn Heggem – 6. Thought he had scored for a few minutes. England thought he got lucky for catching Bellingham.

David Møller Wolfe – 6. Dealt well with threat of Madueke and Saka for most of the game. Occasional forays forward before coming off.

Martin Ødegaard – 8. The heartbeat of Norway’s team grew in influence massively after a slow start. Gave everything for the cause.

Sander Berge – 6. Screened Norway’s back four tirelessly. No easy task in the sweltering conditions in Miami.

Patrick Berg – 7. Won ball off Kane for opening goal and a bustling presence throughout. Looks perfect for Premier League.

Alexander Sørloth – 6. Height always causes problems, although he dallied in the first half when a pass to Haaland was on.

Erling Haaland – 7. Opponents never feel safe when he’s around but looked totally devastated when he had to come off in extra time.

Andreas Schjelderup – 7. Only the Benfica winger will know if he actually meant his goal but they all count.

Substitutes: Fredrik Aursnes (for Ryerson, 60) – 7. Came to his side’s rescue with goalline clearance. Oscar Bobb (for Sørloth, 68) – 6. Added dynamism down Norway’s right flank but could not make England pay in extra time. Antonio Nusa (for Schjelderup, 68) – 7. Caused real problems when he came off the bench. Marcus Pedersen (for Wolfe, 89) – 5. Struggled to contain Saka in extra time. Leo Østigård (for Heggem, 90) – 5. Slow to react to the rebound when Bellingham scored England’s winner. Jørgen Strand Larsen (for Haaland, 106) – 5. It’s not easy being Haaland’s understudy. Couldn’t make an impact.

England player ratings

Jordan Pickford – 6. Looked shaky on occasions. Not clear why he doesn’t try to catch the ball more often.

Ezri Konsa – 7. Adapted well to new role at right-back, even if Schjelderup’s goal came down his side.

John Stones – 7. Got away with a real howler in the first half having not started since opening game. Yet recovered extremely well.

Marc Guéhi – 8. Immense battle with his Manchester City teammate Haaland. Pulled off an epic block to stop a Nusa shot.

Nico O’Reilly – 7. Outstanding tackle to stop Bobb in full flow. Will have been disappointed to have been taken off.

Elliot Anderson – 9. Surging run set up first goal and dominated central midfield. Looks worth every penny Manchester City paid for him.

Declan Rice – 5. Clearly suffering from the effects of injury and illness. Not his usual bustling presence and set-piece delivery was poor.

Noni Madueke – 4. Failed to capitalise on early opportunities, even if he showed that he can use his right foot occasionally.

Jude Bellingham – 9. Is there anything he can’t do? Unbelievable composure for first goal and pure instinct for second.

Anthony Gordon – 8. A standout performance on the left flank and provided another excellent assist for Bellingham.

Harry Kane – 7. Hardly had a sight of goal but the captain still played his part all over the pitch.

Substitutes: Eberechi Eze (for Rice, ht) – 6. Inches away from the winner in normal time, could have done more. Bukayo Saka (for Madueke, ht) – 8. Created England’s best chance in second half and far more effective than his Arsenal teammate. Reece James (for Gordon, 71) – 6. Came on in midfield before moving to right-back. Needs more game time but can be a real asset. Djed Spence (for O’Reilly, 86) – 7. Made a really positive impact and felt hard done by to see penalty overturned. Morgan Rogers (for Konsa, 89) – 8. Added some real thrust and it was from his shot that Bellingham pounced in extra time. Dan Burn (for Bellingham, 111) – 7. His cameos off the bench are becoming the stuff of legend. Towering in the second half of extra time.
