In Emmerdale spoilers for Monday, September 14, Sarah Sugden (Katie Hill) finally breaks down and confesses everything to Jacob (Joe-Warren Plant) after intense pressure from her family. This comes as Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins) faces a harrowing ordeal in prison, including a lockdown, a cell search, and a full-body search that triggers a PTSD-induced attack, leading to her placement in segregation.
Sarah's refusal and Cain's intervention
Earlier this week, Sarah went to the police to deliberately incriminate Charity in the murder of Dr Todd (Caroline Harker) – a crime she carried out herself – in a bid to punish her gran for lying about baby Leyla’s paternity. With insurmountable evidence against her, Charity was charged with murder, despite her claims of self-defence, and thrown in prison, much to the horror of her loved ones.
Knowing only Cain (Jeff Hordley) could get through to stubborn Sarah, Charity had Mackenzie Boyd (Lawerence Robb) hand him the St Christopher medal, which left the Dingle patriarch knowing what to do. After Charity caught him up on the truth about Leyla and Sarah’s role in Todd’s demise, Cain turned his attention to his granddaughter, urging her to change her statement and stop punishing her gran, who has only ever tried to protect her. When appealing to her heart failed, Cain reminded Sarah of what Todd put Charity through, which perhaps summoned a bolt of guilt in Sarah. Nonetheless, she refused to budge, leaving Cain at a loss of how to get her to see sense.
Charity's prison ordeal and lockdown
Charity has come to believe that she could be spending the rest of her life behind bars – and the situation escalates further for her next week when a lockdown leads to a cell search, where officers discover white powder. A humiliating full-body search is conducted in subsequent scenes, which leads to a PTSD-induced attack. Charity is subsequently placed in segregation.
Mackenzie's desperate attempts and family pressure
Back in the village, a desperate Mackenzie tries with all his might to do anything that could secure Charity her freedom. First, he attempts to pressure Serena Sugden (Casey Al-Shaqsy) into helping Charity out. When that fails, Chas (Lucy Pargeter) takes it upon herself to summon a family meeting, where – with help from Mackenzie – she pressures Sarah to change her statement. With Sarah refusing once again, Mack threatens to expose Sarah’s crimes and Leyla’s paternity to Jacob. Cain intervenes, supporting Sarah, telling Mackenzie to back down.
Getting pressure from all angles, Sarah ultimately breaks down and confesses everything to Jacob. The question is: how will he react?
