Constitution River, the second-best three-year-old of the season, will get an immediate chance to fill the void left by Bow Echo's retirement when he faces Ombudsman in the International Stakes at York on Wednesday. The unbeaten colt, rated 124, takes on the world's top-rated middle-distance horse, Ombudsman, who carries a mark of 127, in a race that promises to be a memorable renewal.
Bow Echo's Retirement Creates Opportunity
Bow Echo, George Boughey's unbeaten colt, was retired to stud last week after a training setback. The 2,000 Guineas winner was the world's top-rated three-year-old on 127, just 4lb behind the joint top-rated older horses, Ka Ying Rising and Ombudsman. His exit leaves a gap in the season's narrative, but Constitution River, also unbeaten in three starts, steps into the breach.
Constitution River powered three lengths clear in the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in July, following a narrow win in the Prix du Jockey Club in June. That form pushed his global ranking to 124, 7lb behind Ombudsman before their first meeting.
Strong Field for the International Stakes
Wednesday's feature is not a two-horse race. Andrew Balding's Item, a decisive winner of the Dante Stakes in May over the same track and trip, is among the nine-strong field. Item's only blip was a ninth-place finish as second-favourite for the Derby on soft ground.
Ombudsman is a shade of odds-on with most bookmakers to follow up his win in last year's running, which was marked by pacemaker Birr Castle's huge lead that was reeled in only inside the final furlong. That race followed Qirat's 150-1 Sussex Stakes win at Goodwood, adding to the sense of unease. This year's race should be an easier watch.
Constitution River's Potential
Constitution River has looked exceptional since his seven-length defeat of a subsequent Royal Ascot winner in the Dee Stakes at Chester. A price around 7-4 may underestimate his chance against Ombudsman, who is the world's highest-rated middle-distance horse.
The International Stakes has produced outstanding renewals, including two in the last six seasons that were named global "Race of the Year." Wednesday's race offers a realistic chance to make it three out of seven.
Ebor Festival's Four Group Ones
The International is the first of four Group Ones at the Ebor festival, alongside the Yorkshire Oaks, Nunthorpe Stakes, and City of York Stakes on Saturday, promoted to Group One last year. Despite this, the Ebor Handicap remains the feature event of the final afternoon and the festival.
The Ebor Handicap is one of the finest and most popular betting races of the year. Recent winners include Trawlerman, who later won the Ascot Gold Cup, and Willie Mullins's Ethical Diamond, who took the Breeders' Cup Turf last year.
Off the track, racing faces uncertainties, with the Racecourse Association disintegrating and betting shops listed alongside "vape shops" in government high street plans. But on the Knavesmire, the summer's highlights from Royal Ascot to Goodwood suggest this week could produce a moment to match them.
