Oleksandr Usyk, the Ukrainian heavyweight champion, has revealed his plan to help Anthony Joshua defeat Tyson Fury, as he outlines his own future in the sport. Usyk, who has defeated Joshua, Fury, and Daniel Dubois twice each, believes he has only two fights left before retirement.
Usyk's Remaining Fights and Legacy
Usyk stated, 'I think maybe around two more fights. At least, this is my plan.' He emphasized that he wants to do what he wants, not what he needs, and his next test is against Rico Verhoeven on May 23 in Giza. Despite his dominance, Usyk remains focused on his legacy beyond titles, aiming to help young boxers and support Ukraine through his foundation.
Mentoring Anthony Joshua
Usyk has formed a close bond with Joshua, who joined his training camp ahead of the Jake Paul fight. After Joshua lost two friends in a car crash, Usyk provided support. Usyk said, 'Anthony is working very hard. I see his focus, his discipline, and big motivation. He is not finished.' Usyk believes Joshua can beat Fury: 'My friend AJ can win this fight. I believe in him.'
Future Opponents and Retirement
Usyk is open to a third fight with Fury or a fourth undisputed bout with Dubois, but he is not looking past Verhoeven. He said, 'A perfect final fight is not only about the opponent. The most important thing is that it’s a good fight, and I leave the ring with peace in my heart.'
Usyk's Broader Impact
Beyond boxing, Usyk serves as a symbol of hope for Ukraine amid the war with Russia. He works with his Usyk 17 Promotion to support young boxers and the Usyk Foundation to aid Ukrainian defenders. He also partnered with Promova as Chief Discipline Officer to help people learn languages.
Usyk concluded, 'Titles are part of history, but titles are not everything. I want to do more for boxing and for people. For me, this is also my legacy.'
