Newcastle United have secured the signing of highly-rated Arsenal prospect Kyran Thompson, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. The 16-year-old winger had been heavily linked with Tottenham, while Manchester City also showed interest, but Newcastle have won the race and will bring him in on a free transfer.
Thompson's rise through the ranks
Thompson joined Arsenal from West Ham two years ago and has quickly become one of the standout talents in the Gunners' academy. He has already made his Under-21 debut in Premier League 2, despite not turning 17 until September. The winger has also earned four caps for England Under-17s.
Arsenal were working on a new contract for Thompson after his scholarship terms ended, but failed to reach an agreement. This is a blow to the club, which has shown a willingness to give young players first-team opportunities under Mikel Arteta. Myles Lewis-Skelly, Ethan Nwaneri, and Max Dowman have broken through in the last 18 months, while Marli Salmon and Jaden Dixon made their senior debuts last season. Thompson was expected to follow suit.
Newcastle's transfer activity
Securing Thompson is a positive for Newcastle after missing out on other targets. The Magpies agreed a deal with Freiburg for midfielder Johan Manzambi but were beaten by Aston Villa, who signed him for just over £51m. Last month, Newcastle missed out on Victor Munoz, who joined Liverpool instead of moving from Osasuna.
These frustrations follow a difficult summer in 2025 when Newcastle failed to land Hugo Ekitike (to Liverpool) and Benjamin Sesko (to Manchester United). Additionally, Anthony Gordon left for Barcelona for nearly £70m and Sandro Tonali moved to Tottenham for £100m.
