Man Utd to earn £5-6m from Greenwood sell-on clause

Manchester United are set to receive a modest windfall of between £5 million and £6 million from Mason Greenwood's anticipated departure from Marseille this summer, courtesy of a sell-on clause inserted into his 2024 transfer.

Greenwood's Impressive Marseille Stint

Greenwood left Manchester United for Marseille in 2024 for £26.6 million. During his time in France, the 24-year-old scored 48 goals in 76 appearances across all competitions. Despite his prolific form, Marseille are compelled to sell players this summer due to financial constraints, and Greenwood is expected to be among those departing.

Interested Clubs and Potential Fee

Fenerbahce are leading the race for Greenwood's signature and are reportedly close to finalising a deal. According to L'Equipe, Atletico Madrid remain in contention. Roma had also shown interest, but the race now appears to be between the Turkish club and the Spanish side. The BBC reports that Fenerbahce believe they can secure the transfer for around €45 million (£38.36 million), with personal terms already agreed with the player. RMC Sport adds that a four-year contract has been prepared for Greenwood in Istanbul.

Manchester United's Sell-On Clause

When Greenwood left Manchester United, the sell-on clause was described as 'significant' and is believed to be around 50 per cent of the profit from his next permanent move. Marseille are expected to make between £10 million and £12 million in profit on the sale, meaning Manchester United will receive approximately £5 million to £6 million. While this provides a small boost to the transfer budget, it will not significantly alter the club's summer plans.

United's Transfer Window Challenges

Manchester United have faced frustrations in the transfer market, particularly in midfield. They have missed out on targets such as Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham, while Aurelien Tchouameni signed a new contract with Real Madrid. However, a deal has been agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta, and another has been struck to bring Andrey Santos from Chelsea for an initial £48 million, with £2 million in add-ons. The 22-year-old Santos is expected to move to Old Trafford. Despite these additions, some fans may feel the signings lack the star quality anticipated for the club's return to the Champions League.
