Lamine Yamal missed training on Thursday ahead of the 2026 World Cup final, raising concerns that the Barcelona forward could be sidelined for Sunday's showdown between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Yamal's fitness concerns
The 19-year-old came into the tournament carrying a hamstring injury and was used sparingly during the group stage. Despite playing every minute of the knockout rounds, he has recorded just one goal and no assists in seven appearances, clearly not at full fitness. Yamal was seen on Thursday with strapping on his left thigh, sitting on a yoga mat on the pitch and appearing to be in discomfort while speaking with head coach Luis de la Fuente.
Spanish outlet AS reported that Yamal's absence is not a major concern, with De la Fuente simply managing his workload ahead of the final. However, the sight of the winger in pain has sparked anxiety among fans.
Porro also absent
Pedro Porro also missed training, another worry given the Tottenham right-back's impressive tournament, including two goals, one in the semi-final against France. Multiple Spanish outlets downplayed both absences, attributing them to load management.
Spain are aiming to win their second World Cup, following the 2010 triumph by the 'Golden Generation'. They beat tournament favourites France in the semi-finals, while Argentina knocked out England in heartbreaking fashion to reach the final.
Yamal vs Messi narrative
The final has been billed as a battle between two generational Barcelona talents: Yamal and Lionel Messi. Fans are eager to see the two face off, adding to the drama.
Spain captain and top scorer Mikel Oyarzabal said after the semi-final: 'Hopefully we can put the icing on the cake in five days' time. We've earned the right to dream, to have the title in our sights. If I get the chance to help out without scoring a goal, I'll be just as happy.'
The situation surrounding Yamal's fitness will be closely monitored in the days leading up to the final.
