Sir Sadiq Khan is backing efforts to stage the long-awaited heavyweight clash between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua at Wembley Stadium later this year, though the fight could require a 4am UK start time to accommodate global broadcasters.
Potential early morning start for global audience
Saudi financier Turki Alalshikh suggested earlier this week that if the all-British bout takes place in London, it would need to begin in the early hours to satisfy international television requirements. While the Mayor's office is open to relaxing Wembley's curfew restrictions, promoters have not yet made a formal approach.
A spokesperson for the Mayor of London stated: "London is the sporting capital of the world and the Mayor is working to bring more of the world's biggest events to the city. London has staged some of the biggest boxing events in recent history at Wembley Stadium, with record crowds of over 90,000 attending heavyweight contests including Anthony Joshua vs Daniel Dubois and Tyson Fury vs Dillian Whyte."
Council approval and competing bids
Technically, Brent Council, which oversees the stadium area, would rule on any formal application. However, Sir Sadiq appears ready to give full backing. Reports indicate the bout would need to start as late as 4am UK time, positioning Las Vegas—also interested in hosting—as a leading contender.
Alalshikh said earlier this week: "We want the fights here in England, but we want the time zone and the time zone of all the world, especially in America."
Fighters' upcoming bouts
Before any official announcement, both fighters must win comeback bouts scheduled for this month. Fury faces Mariusz Wach in Thailand on July 24, while Joshua fights Kristian Prenga in Jeddah the following evening.
