Anthony Joshua Shares Emotional Mother's Day Tribute to Fallen Friends

Heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua marked a poignant Mother's Day by celebrating with the grieving families of his two close friends who tragically died in a car accident late last year. The emotional gathering saw Joshua dancing and sharing heartfelt moments with loved ones of Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, whom he affectionately called his "brothers."

Tragic Accident Claims Lives of Joshua's Close Companions

The devastating incident occurred in late December in the town of Makun in southwestern Nigeria, where Joshua had been vacationing following his knockout victory over Jake Paul in Miami. The trio had been enjoying a break together in Nigeria, the birthplace of Joshua's parents, when their Lexus SUV collided with a stationary truck.

Videos from the crash scene showed Joshua emerging from the mangled wreckage clearly in discomfort, though he escaped with minor injuries and was released from hospital on New Year's Day. Tragically, his two friends in the vehicle did not survive the impact.

Legal Proceedings and Personal Mourning

The driver of the vehicle, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, has since appeared in court in Nigeria facing multiple charges including:

  • Causing death by dangerous driving
  • Reckless and negligent driving
  • Driving without due care
  • Driving without a valid driver's license

With the case reportedly adjourned until April, Joshua has spent the intervening weeks coming to terms with the loss of two of his closest companions, who had formed part of his tight inner circle throughout much of his professional boxing career.

Heartfelt Social Media Tributes

In one of his first social media posts after the tragedy in January, Joshua expressed his grief and appreciation for his late friends: "Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers. I didn't even realise how special they are. I'll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men."

He added: "100% it's tough for me, but I know it's even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers."

Mother's Day Celebration of Life and Legacy

During what has been a painful period both personally and professionally, Joshua maintained a relatively low profile while recovering from the mental and physical scars of the accident. However, over the Mother's Day weekend, he joined families of his late friends for a celebration of life.

A touching video from the event shows Joshua dancing and sharing jokes on the dancefloor with loved ones of Sina and Latz, a moment that has been met with widespread admiration and support from the boxing community and fans worldwide.

Emotional Words of Remembrance

At the gathering, Joshua paid homage to his fallen "brothers," stating that his "heart" remained with them two-and-a-half months after their tragic deaths. Fighting back tears at points, he shared: "I thank God that we can come under one roof and celebrate our mothers, celebrate our brothers, celebrate those that are not with us, celebrate those that are with us, knowing that our fate will one day come."

He continued: "We just stay strong until that day. We pray for our transition and just to be great in the afterlife. Why I talk about that is because my heart is for my bros right now."

Gratitude to Mothers of His Friends

The former 2012 Olympic gold medalist went on to express his appreciation to the mothers of both Sina and Latz for giving him trusted companions who traveled the world with him for so many years. "This is for my mum and our family but also Sina and Latz, Sina's mum, Latz's mum, it's all interconnected," Joshua explained.

He added emotionally: "I'm not making too much sense, I'm just speaking from my heart basically. So thank you mums for giving me Latz and Sina for so many years, looking over me, I appreciate it a lot and thank you very much."

Looking Toward a Boxing Return

In a recent interview with iFL TV, Joshua's long-time promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that the fighter was eyeing an imminent return to training ahead of a potential showdown with Tyson Fury later this year. "We're very close to returning to training camp," Hearn explained. "And I feel like AJ is physically and perhaps mentally ready to throw himself back into that environment."

Hearn suggested Joshua would likely need a warm-up bout in the summer before any potential blockbuster fight with Fury, noting: "Given the fact that he only had a few rounds against Jake Paul and everything that's happened as well, unfortunately. But until he gets back into training camp, there'll be no decisions on the actual route that we take."

The promoter emphasized that despite the personal tragedy, Joshua remains committed to his boxing career: "For everything that he's been through and all the pain, I don't think that will leave. But he has a career and he has a job to do in that respect, which he wants to continue doing."
