Jordan Henderson was stretchered off and placed on oxygen in alarming scenes following England's dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico. The former Liverpool captain, who has since been taken to hospital, required medical attention after landing awkwardly and injuring his arm while attempting to clamber over advertising hoardings during the full-time celebrations.
Teammates gather as medics treat Henderson
Henderson's teammates appeared to gather around him in a huddle as medics treated him on the pitch before he was carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen. Jude Bellingham was visibly furious over an incident that occurred behind the goal, with Harry Kane having to physically pull him away.
When asked for an update on his teammate, Three Lions captain Kane said: "Jordan [Henderson] just fell over there, I think he's okay, just something to do with his arm."
Bellingham and Tuchel offer updates
However, fellow teammate Bellingham suggested the injury appeared more serious, saying: "He's in a bit of bother, but the medical team have got everything under control, best to not give too much detail when I don't know too much what's going on, but everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see."
Manager Tuchel then delivered a concerning assessment of Henderson's condition, stating: "Not good, not good, next thing is a right defender now with the red card, Jordan just fell over and injured his wrist, it looks really bad."
Uncertainty over tournament future
It remains unclear whether Henderson's injury will rule him out of the remainder of the tournament. It's understood that the England midfielder has since been transported to hospital for further assessment and treatment, reports the Mirror. The injury came after Henderson received a yellow card on the sidelines in the final moments of the game despite not having any time on the pitch.
Match recap: England's hard-fought win
Henderson's mishap took place as he and his teammates were celebrating a hard-earned 3-2 triumph. Having raced into a 2-0 advantage thanks to Jude Bellingham's double, Julian Quinones pulled one back for Mexico shortly before half-time. Mexican confidence grew when right-back Jarell Quansah was sent off early in the second half, only for Tuchel's side to strike back immediately through captain Kane's spot-kick after Anthony Gordon was taken down. Raul Jimenez secured a penalty of his own to heighten English anxiety, but Tuchel's men held firm to secure the result.
Tuchel and Rooney react
A quarter-final clash against Norway now lies ahead, with the German manager saying: "Very proud. We needed everything. It was super difficult. In the moments we thought we catch the momentum, we had setbacks. That is proper mentality." He added: "This team really mean it. When the going gets tough, they never give up, they never lose belief. It was one step more. We need to take this in. This is Azteca, it's Mexico, a crazy game. We left everything out there, every single one of us. We need to take this in, now it's full steam ahead."
Reflecting on the victory in the BBC studio, former England forward Wayne Rooney said: "That was one of the greatest results, performances. They showed attitude, grit, desire, everything you would have wanted an England team to show, they showed tonight." He added: "Going down to 10 we knew it was going to be difficult. They sat in and I was worried that we went too deep too early, but they put their bodies on the line. The centre-backs and Pickford were outstanding. We were the better team until the red card and then we showed a lesson in heading the ball out of the box, blocking shots, just brilliant."
