Emergency measures as temperatures soar

Tour de France organisers implemented emergency measures to combat a crushing heatwave that settled on this year’s race as riders tackled stage four. The peloton faced temperatures exceeding 40°C over 181 gruelling kilometres and four categorised climbs, racing towards Foix through the Aude and Ariege regions.

Cancer survivor steals the show

Torstein Træen, a 30-year-old cancer survivor diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2022, stole the yellow jersey and built an eight-minute lead on four-time champion Tadej Pogacar. The former world champion Mads Pedersen sped clear to win the sprint into Foix with ease.

Impact on the race

The extreme heat forced riders to adapt their strategies, with many seeking shade and hydration at every opportunity. Organisers provided additional water stations and ice vests to help athletes cope with the conditions. Træen’s remarkable performance, just two years after his cancer diagnosis, highlighted his resilience and determination.
