Victor Wembanyama Makes History as First Unanimous NBA Defensive Player of the Year
Wembanyama First Unanimous NBA Defensive Player of Year

In a historic moment for professional basketball, San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama has been named the NBA Defensive Player of the Year with unanimous voting, becoming the first player ever to achieve this distinction. At just 22 years old, the French phenom also becomes the youngest winner in the award's history, which dates back to the 1982-83 season.

A Season of Defensive Dominance

The 7-foot-4-inch defensive stalwart led the league in blocked shots for the third consecutive season, consistently terrorizing opponents who dared to challenge him at the rim. His defensive prowess was so overwhelming that he received every first-place vote from the selection committee, a rare accomplishment in NBA award voting.

"The real struggle might have been getting to 65 games," Wembanyama told NBC Sports Network, referencing the minimum appearance requirement for award eligibility. "But I'm super, super happy to win this award and actually super proud to be the first-ever unanimous."

Record-Breaking Achievements

Wembanyama's victory comes with several significant milestones:

  • He becomes the youngest Defensive Player of the Year winner ever, breaking the previous age record of 23
  • The Spurs franchise now boasts four different Defensive Player of the Year winners, more than any other team in NBA history
  • Wembanyama joins an elite group of just three players who have won both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards

San Antonio's previous winners include Alvin Robertson (1986), David Robinson (1992), and Kawhi Leonard (2015, 2016). Wembanyama now joins Robinson and Michael Jordan as the only players to capture both the rookie and defensive honors.

Team Recognition and Future Prospects

Spurs forward Keldon Johnson praised his teammate's work ethic and character, stating: "I feel like he is one of the hardest workers that I've ever been around. He takes his craft very seriously. I feel like this is just a small token of what's to come for Victor."

Wembanyama himself emphasized the team aspect of his success: "We often overlook the team aspect. I'm sitting here. I happen to be the guy who's put in the spotlight, but I am part of a system and I couldn't get this award and I couldn't do what I do if it wasn't for my teammates ... and my coaching staff."

Additional Honors Await

The young star is also a finalist for the Most Valuable Player award, competing against Oklahoma City's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Denver's Nikola Jokić. This positioning almost certainly guarantees him a spot on the All-NBA First Team, while his Defensive Player of the Year win ensures selection to the All-Defensive Team.

Wembanyama's unanimous selection marks only the third time in the past decade that a player has received 100% of first-place votes for a major NBA award. The previous instances were Stephen Curry's unanimous MVP selection in 2016 and Wembanyama's own unanimous Rookie of the Year win in 2024.

Oklahoma City's Chet Holmgren finished second in the defensive voting, followed by Detroit's Ausar Thompson in third place. Both players helped their teams secure number one seeds for the playoffs, but neither could challenge Wembanyama's defensive supremacy throughout the regular season.
