O'Reilly dismisses Haaland's mind games before World Cup clash

England left-back Nico O'Reilly has dismissed Erling Haaland's suggestion that England are 'clear favourites' to beat Norway in their World Cup quarter-final, calling it 'mind games'. The match is set for Saturday night in Miami, with a semi-final spot at stake.

Haaland's comments spark reaction

Haaland, who has scored seven goals in four World Cup appearances, told reporters: 'There's some clear favourites out there, England's one of them, so I think all of you should put every single pressure on the English lads.' The Manchester City striker added that Norway's chances of winning the trophy were 'still really low'.

When asked about Haaland's remarks, O'Reilly replied: 'Yeah, mind games.' He acknowledged Norway's strength as a team, saying: 'They're a good team as well. They've showed that throughout the whole tournament. It's not just certain players that we need to worry about. They're good collectively.'

O'Reilly on Haaland's threat

O'Reilly, who plays alongside Haaland at Manchester City, recognised the striker's danger: 'Erling's Erling. We all know what he's like. He can score goals. He's dangerous in the box, and he's a real threat. But they need to get him the ball in first. A lot goes into it.' He added: 'I think keeping Erling quiet gives us a real chance to win the game. We know the threat he can cause – unbelievable striker, world class.'

England's defensive concerns

England manager Thomas Tuchel faces a selection nightmare in defence. Jarrel Quansah is suspended for the first of two matches after a red card against Mexico. Reece James is doubtful with a hamstring injury, Declan Rice is isolating due to illness, and Marc Guehi is likely to miss out with a hamstring problem. Dan Burn is a potential starter, with his physical presence seen as an asset against Haaland.

Norway have impressed in the tournament, notably beating Brazil 2-1 in the last 16. Haaland's seven goals put him one ahead of England's Harry Kane and one behind Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot race.
