NBA Cancels Atlanta Hawks' Strip Club Theme Night Following League-Wide Backlash

The National Basketball Association has officially canceled a controversial theme night planned by the Atlanta Hawks that would have celebrated the city's famous Magic City strip club. The league announced the decision on Monday, citing "significant concerns" raised by various stakeholders across the basketball community.

League Commissioner Cites Broad Concerns

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver released a statement explaining the league's position. "When we became aware of the Atlanta Hawks' scheduled promotion, we reached out to Hawks leadership to better understand their plans and rationale," Silver said. "While we appreciate the team's perspective and their desire to move forward, we have heard significant concerns from a broad array of league stakeholders, including fans, partners and employees. I believe canceling this promotion is the right decision for the broader NBA community."

Player Opposition and Cultural Context

The cancellation came after San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet publicly criticized the planned event in a Medium post. Kornet argued that celebrating a strip club "would reflect poorly on us as an NBA community, specifically in being complicit in the potential objectification and mistreatment of women in our society."

Golden State Warriors center Al Horford, who played nine seasons for the Hawks, supported Kornet's position by reposting the letter with the caption "Well said Luke."

Despite the controversy, Magic City holds significant cultural importance in Atlanta's entertainment scene. The strip club has been celebrated by numerous celebrities including:

  • Rappers Drake, Quavo, and 2 Chainz who have praised its impact on music culture
  • Basketball legends Michael Jordan and Shaquille O'Neal who have visited the establishment
  • MLS's Atlanta United who celebrated their 2018 championship at the club

Hawks' Original Plans and Ownership Involvement

The Atlanta Hawks had announced the theme night last month as a tribute to what they called an "iconic cultural institution." The planned event was scheduled for next Monday's game against the Orlando Magic and would have featured:

  1. Magic City's famous lemon pepper wings
  2. A live music performance by Atlanta native rapper TI
  3. Exclusive merchandise celebrating the establishment

Hawks principal owner Jami Gertz, who also serves as a film-maker and actor, had been particularly invested in the promotion. Gertz produced a five-part docuseries titled "Magic City: An American Fantasy" that explored the club's history, its place in Black and hip-hop culture, and its significance to Atlanta.

"This collaboration and theme night is very meaningful to me after all the work that we did to put together 'Magic City: An American Fantasy,'" Gertz said when the promotion was initially announced. "The iconic Atlanta institution has made such an incredible impact on our city and its unique culture."

League Values and Community Standards

In his Medium post opposing the event, Kornet emphasized the NBA's responsibility to maintain appropriate community standards. "We desire to provide an environment where fans of all ages can safely come and enjoy the game of basketball and where we can celebrate the history and culture of communities in good conscience," he wrote. "The celebration of a strip club is not conduct aligned with that vision."

The Hawks organization had no immediate comment following the NBA's cancellation announcement. The decision represents a significant intervention by league leadership into team marketing initiatives and reflects ongoing discussions about appropriate partnerships and promotions within professional sports.
