London Marathon 2027 Ballot Opens: How to Enter Next Year's Race
London Marathon 2027 Ballot Opens Today for Entries

The 2027 London Marathon ballot opens today, Friday, April 24, 2026, giving runners a chance to secure a place in next year's iconic 26.2-mile race through the capital. As the 2026 marathon approaches this Sunday, those who missed out can now enter for 2027.

Record-Breaking Demand

The 2025 ballot set a new world record with 1,133,813 entries, surpassing the previous record of 840,318. This year, over 59,000 runners are expected to participate in the 2026 event. Since its inception in 1981, more than 1.3 million people have completed the London Marathon, and in 2025 it held the record for the world's largest marathon with 56,640 finishers. Runners have raised an extraordinary £1.4 billion for charity.

Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, said: 'I think marathon running is so popular because it genuinely brings people together. Having these real-life experiences is what the world needs more of, and people are reaching out for more. The vast majority of people are unbelievably welcoming. That’s what the London Marathon shows; that’s what marathons around the world show. We need more of that community spirit and togetherness.'

How to Sign Up

The 2027 London Marathon will take place on Sunday, April 25, 2027. There is a possibility that the event could be held over two days to accommodate more participants, following record-breaking demand. Runners can enter the public ballot, with winners drawn at random. The ballot opens at 9am BST on April 24 and closes at 4pm BST on May 1, 2026. Results will be announced in early July. If a two-day event is approved, applicants will be automatically entered for both days, increasing their chances.

Costs

For successful UK ballot applicants, the entry fee is £79.99. If you choose to donate your entry fee to the London Marathon Foundation in case of an unsuccessful entry, the fee is reduced to £49.99. International entries cost £225, including a carbon offset fee. Charity places require a registration fee (around £120) and a minimum sponsorship pledge of approximately £2,500.

Second Ballot Chance

If you are not selected in the main ballot, you are automatically entered into a second ballot, doubling your chance of securing a place. Success in either ballot confirms your prepaid entry.

Confirmation

Upon applying, you will receive a confirmation email and a payment receipt if you donated. Check your junk folder if you do not see it. Ballot results will be emailed to all entrants in July 2026; the exact date is yet to be confirmed.

What If Unsuccessful?

If you are unsuccessful in both ballots, you will receive a free hydration vest worth over £100, and your entry fee will be donated to the London Marathon Foundation.

Alternative Marathons

If you do not get a place, consider other UK marathons. The Manchester Marathon is flat and beginner-friendly. The Great Welsh Marathon offers coastal views. Brighton Marathon takes place a few weeks before London. Blackpool Marathon features seaside landmarks. Edinburgh Marathon has a super-flat route. The New Forest Marathon is a multi-terrain challenge through a national park.
