Verstappen Wins Thrilling Canadian Grand Prix for Red Bull
Verstappen Wins Canadian Grand Prix

Max Verstappen secured his sixth win of the 2026 Formula One season with a masterful performance at the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal. The Red Bull driver overcame early pressure from Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and a late charge from Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton to take the chequered flag at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.

Race Highlights

The race began under overcast skies, with Verstappen starting from pole position. He maintained the lead into Turn 1, while Leclerc slotted into second ahead of Hamilton. The first safety car was deployed on lap 8 when Kevin Magnussen's Haas stopped on track with a hydraulic issue. Verstappen used the restart to build a 2-second gap over Leclerc before the second safety car period on lap 25, triggered by a collision between Sergio Perez and Lando Norris that left debris on the track.

During the safety car, most drivers pitted for fresh tires. Verstappen switched from medium to hard compound, while Hamilton opted for softs. The strategy proved crucial in the final stages. After the restart, Hamilton quickly dispatched Leclerc and began closing on Verstappen. However, Verstappen's superior tire management allowed him to hold a steady gap of around 1.5 seconds until the finish.

Key Battles

Further back, a fierce fight for fourth place saw George Russell hold off Carlos Sainz and Fernando Alonso. Russell’s Mercedes showed strong pace but lacked the top speed to challenge for the podium. Alonso, driving for Aston Martin, made an early pit stop under the first safety car and used the undercut to gain positions, but couldn't match the pace of the leaders.

In the midfield, Pierre Gasly scored valuable points for Alpine with a seventh-place finish, while Yuki Tsunoda continued his impressive form with ninth for RB. The home crowd had little to cheer as both Canadian drivers, Lance Stroll and Nicholas Latifi, finished outside the points in 15th and 17th respectively.

Championship Implications

Verstappen's victory extends his lead in the drivers' championship to 34 points over Hamilton. Leclerc remains third, but now trails by 52 points. In the constructors' standings, Red Bull leads Mercedes by 28 points, with Ferrari a further 15 points back.

Speaking after the race, Verstappen said: "It was a tough race, the safety cars made it tricky, but the car was fantastic. The team did a great job with the strategy." Hamilton admitted defeat was frustrating: "We gave it everything. The soft tire at the end gave us a chance, but Max was just too quick today."

The next race is the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in two weeks, where Verstappen will aim to extend his championship lead on home turf.
