Demolition of Edinburgh Tower Block Delayed by Single Tenant
Demolition Delayed as One Tenant Refuses to Leave

The planned demolition of a tower block in Edinburgh has been postponed indefinitely after a single tenant refused to vacate his flat. The sole remaining occupier of Inchmickery Court in Muirhouse has resisted eviction proceedings for nearly three years, according to his family, who insist he will not leave until his demands for alternative accommodation are met.

Background of the Dispute

The demolition of the estate was first approved by Edinburgh Council in 2023. However, the ongoing eviction process has significantly delayed the project. Since November 2023, the tenant has been living alone in the 73-year-old building, which, along with its sister block Oxcars Court, contains 75 flats across 10 stories. The council plans to replace both blocks with a single development of 150 flats.

Family and Community Support

A relative of the tenant, who wished to remain anonymous, described the situation as 'absolutely shocking' and expressed full support for the man's decision to stay in his home of many years. 'I think it's ridiculous. He's worked all his life and paid his rent – why should he have to leave?' the relative said. 'As a family, we support him in making this stand. We are worried about him because eviction proceedings are starting. If he is evicted and doesn't leave willingly, he might not get another council house because he's wilfully made himself homeless. He would sleep in a tent if he had to to stand his ground.'

Other nearby residents have also voiced support for the tenant and called on the council to ensure his safety as court proceedings move forward.

Council's Position

A document published by Edinburgh Council stated: 'There is one remaining tenant in the block, so essential services are being maintained while the eviction process proceeds through the Sheriff Court. Officers from the High-Rise Management and Investment (HRMI) team are in regular contact with the Locality team to help support this process as required.' The council also noted that the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service is aware of the situation and that HRMI is meeting with the Tenant Safety Team to take a proportionate approach to the continued maintenance of the block.

Social Media Reaction

The tenant's 'one man stand' has garnered widespread support on social media. One commenter said: 'All these new flats built for students…maybe should have prioritised for actual residents. Well done, that man, stand your ground.' Another added: 'They spent money putting these up, not sure why they are pulling them down. Houses were lovely inside.'

Impact on Neighbouring Block

At neighbouring Oxcars Court, 68 residents remain, with council officers attempting to find suitable alternative accommodation while the tower blocks are demolished and replaced. One resident told the Local Democracy Reporting Service: 'The residents just feel absolutely left out of it altogether. If the council can't listen to residents about a complaint about another tenant, how are you going to listen to a complaint about the state of the building?'

The situation remains unresolved as eviction proceedings continue through the courts, with the tenant's family and community rallying behind his cause.
