Purfleet-on-Thames name change draws Londoners

Purfleet-on-Thames, a commuter town in South Essex just 45 minutes from London Liverpool Street, has seen an influx of Londoners since changing its name from Purfleet in 2020. Locals say the new name has improved the town's image and attracted more residents and visitors.

Name change sparks new perception

Six years ago, residents grew tired of their town being overlooked. On July 4, 2020, Purfleet officially became Purfleet-on-Thames to recognise its location on the River Thames and attract investment. The council stated the new name would "formally recognise the link with the river Thames, help promote the planned regeneration activity, reflect the new aspirations of the people and place, and support raising the profile of Purfleet," according to EssexLive.

Local business owner sees shift

Mr Siam, a shop owner who has lived in Purfleet for 25 years, noted a change in visitors' attitudes since the rename. His shop near the train station is popular with arrivals. He said: "Instead of being seen as an industrial hotspot, more people recognise the town as a heritage place. Just adding 'on Thames' makes people see it as more of a beautiful place. Purfleet is definitely attracting more people now. Lots of people come to Rainham Marshes for a walk, or even a wander along the river."

Commuter benefits and affordable housing

Mr Siam added: "More people definitely live here after the name change. Its location next to the M25 and the A13 makes it great, and of course, we have a train station. The town is made up of a lot of busy, commuting, working people." Fellow resident Sharon Michaels, who moved to Purfleet after the name change, agreed: "The name change makes it sound more posh, for sure, like Kingston-on-Thames and places like that. The people are friendly, you can easily get to other places in Essex and travel to London, too. Also, the homes are really affordable."

Impact on the town

The name change has helped rebrand Purfleet from an industrial centre to a desirable place to live. With rail links to London and road connections via the M25 and A13, the town offers easy commuting. The growing interest has boosted local businesses and made the area more attractive to homebuyers seeking affordable property within reach of the capital.
