Seb Reader, a 28-year-old business development manager from Wandsworth, London, saved £30,000 to attend the 2026 World Cup in the United States by moving back in with his mother and sister. He had already accumulated £10,000 in savings but needed an additional £20,000 to fund his trip. By moving home in January 2026, he reduced his monthly rent from £1,300 to just £350 in contributions toward household bills, allowing him to save £950 per month from his commission payments. With no food shopping or other living costs, he managed to save £2,000 per month.
Ticket and Travel Costs
Reader flew to the US in June to watch England's first match and has attended every game so far. He spent £9,300 on seven tickets, including prospective England matches, but has yet to secure a ticket for the final. His total trip budget of £30,000 covers £7,500 for accommodation, £3,225 for flights, £6,000 for food and drink, £2,000 for local transport, £295 for insurance, and £1,760 for visa and extras. He will stay in the US for three months, returning on August 26.
Motivation and Ticket Acquisition
Reader said, “I had a bit of a tough period in life which pushed me to make the steps needed to get the plan underway. I also felt this year there’s an unwavering supporting of England and I do think there’s a good chance of us winning it.” He tried to buy tickets through the England Travellers Supporters Club and the FIFA ballot but failed. Eventually, he secured them through a friend at a sports marketing agency.
Experiences and Social Media
Reader began his trip with a solo week in Chicago, then met friend Jack Banton in Nashville. He watched England's first match in Dallas, the Ghana match in Boston, and flew to New York on June 25. He also visited Memphis, Graceland, and the hot springs of Arkansas. He shares his journey on TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram under @sebbyscenes. He noted that some Americans were unaware of the World Cup, and that fan park beers cost $21.
Final Ticket Dilemma
Reader does not have a final ticket, which costs around £10,000. He said, “It was a budget set for the trip of £30,000 and I’m right at the budget... But you never know, you’ve got to believe someone hears the story and I might get a final ticket.” Alternatively, he may fly back to the UK to watch the final there, then return to the US. His girlfriend will join him after the World Cup.
