Highgate Village to Get New Square and Marketplace from Disused Bus Stop
Highgate Village Set for New Square and Marketplace

A posh north London neighbourhood is set to receive a significant upgrade if plans to transform a disused bus stop are approved. Highgate Village could soon boast a new square and marketplace, replacing what has been described as an 'unsightly hole' in the area.

Plans for the New Square

The Highgate Society, a local volunteer-run group, has submitted plans to Camden Council to convert the former 271 bus stop on the corner of South Grove and Highgate High Street into a 324 square metre square. The space has been unused since Transport for London scrapped the 271 bus route in 2023. If approved, the development will include new trees, benches, a Visit Highgate information board for tourists, York stone paving, granite kerbs, and an electrical hook-up for market stalls.

Community Support

Elspeth Clements, co-chair of the Highgate Society planning committee, called the square an 'exciting community project' and expressed hope that the council would approve it 'on the basis of what's not to like'. The application notes that residents have long urged the council to address the space, which has been 'left unused and in poor condition'.

Additional Developments

An upmarket grocery deli and cafe called Superette, which also has branches on Swain's Lane and Upper Street, has taken over the lease of the shop next to the disused bus stop. The business plans to set up outdoor tables and chairs adjacent to the proposed square.

Highgate Village is known for its Georgian-style buildings, picturesque cottages, abundant trees, gastropubs, and access to green spaces like Waterlow Park, Highgate Wood, and Hampstead Heath. The new square aims to enhance the area's appeal and provide a permanent community hub.
