Camberwell: South London's 'Coolest' Neighbourhood Where Locals Love to Stay
Why Camberwell is a top global 'cool' neighbourhood

Nestled between the bustling hubs of Brixton and Peckham, the South London district of Camberwell has earned a remarkable spot on the global stage. It was recently ranked as the fourth coolest neighbourhood in the world by Time Out, a testament to its unique and vibrant character.

A Hub of Culture and Community Spirit

What truly defines Camberwell, according to those who live and work there, is its diverse community and welcoming atmosphere. Gianluca Tamburella, the 35-year-old manager of the popular local pub The Tiger, highlights the area's cultural mix. "I like the sense of culture here more than anything," he says, noting the refreshing diversity compared to other parts of London.

This sentiment is shared by Colin Esdale, a 55-year-old flight attendant who has called Camberwell home for over two decades. He emphasises the sense of safety and acceptance, stating that as a gay man, he has ‘never felt intimidated or threatened with hostility’ in the area. For Colin, the appeal lies in its central location, proximity to shops and hospitals, and the collection of "nice little bars and quaint places" that act as hidden gems.

An Affordable Food and Drink Paradise

Despite its global 'cool' credentials, Camberwell retains a relative affordability, with average property prices around £597,000, notably below the London average of £661,000. This value extends to its thriving food and drink scene.

Gianluca enthusiastically lists the culinary highlights: "The food around here is incredible." He points to falafel shops, Francesco’s pizzas which are "a steal," and a sandwich shop opposite where a meal deal costs just £7 or £8. The Tiger pub itself sets itself apart with a late license, staying open until 3am on Saturdays with popular karaoke nights.

The area is also home to famed spots like Fladda Fish & Chips, described by awards as an "odyssey of culinary promise." Manager Arul Subra praises Camberwell as a "nice place to be" with "very friendly" people.

A Creative Heart with Lasting Appeal

Camberwell has a strong draw for creative professionals. Musician and landscaper Bradley Burtenshaw, 26, notes how the area caters to artists. "There are a lot of small businesses and a lot of areas for musicians, especially," he says, naming spots like The Old Dispensary pub and Dash the Henge record shop. For him, the live music scene fosters a powerful sense of community.

This magnetic quality is so strong that it pulls people back even after they move away. Nils Jelkeby, a 31-year-old waiter at The Love Walk Cafe, found himself returning to Camberwell's pubs and restaurants. "There’s a good feeling in the area, a good energy," he explains, highlighting the social network of friends and colleagues who live locally.

The neighbourhood's trendy status is further bolstered by its famous former residents, including footballer Tammy Abraham, actor Thomas Brodie-Sangster, and Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine. Combined with its cosy pubs, green spaces, and undeniable community spirit, it's clear why Camberwell continues to charm both locals and global rankings alike.
