London Defies Expectations as Premier Family Destination
Families frequently depart London after having children, seeking more affordable housing, larger gardens, and a perceived family-friendly environment in the Home Counties and beyond. The capital is often viewed as excessively busy, polluted, and prohibitively expensive, making child-rearing seem nearly impossible. However, a groundbreaking new study has overturned this notion, revealing that London is actually the second-best city in the entire world to start a family.
Global Rankings and Key Findings
Out of fifty cities worldwide, statistical analysis demonstrates that London boasts the second-highest number of child-friendly activities and the highest quantity of green spaces. The comprehensive research, conducted by Compare The Market AU, also evaluated national education spending as a percentage of GDP, with London registering at 5.9%. It is noteworthy that the Australian study prominently featured its home cities, with Brisbane securing first place, and Sydney, Perth, and Melbourne all appearing within the top ten.
For British residents living outside the capital, London's silver medal position may come as a surprise. Yet, for numerous parents within the city, there is simply no alternative location they would prefer.
'We Have the Best of Both Worlds'
Caroline Antscherl, a South London resident with two children aged thirteen and fifteen, never contemplated leaving the city where she was born when starting her family. She firmly believes London represents an ideal environment for raising kids and suspects she would experience boredom in a quieter locale.
'We can reach the Southbank within fifteen minutes by train, and there are countless activities available for our teenage children—shows, exhibitions, shopping,' Caroline explains to Metro. She adds that parks and their allotment are within walking distance. 'Our local neighborhood feels like a tight-knit community, which is uncommon for a capital city, but I believe this is fairly standard for London.'
Caroline emphasizes their community's vibrancy: 'We organize street parties, know our neighbors, and the children's school friends live nearby.' She perceives they enjoy the 'best of both worlds,' appreciating the area's diversity, which she states makes life 'far more interesting.' Her children also possess a degree of independence unlikely elsewhere, capable of navigating the Tube and trains independently with parental guidance.
'I adore that our children interact with people from diverse backgrounds,' Caroline remarks. 'I doubt living in the countryside would provide nearly the same exposure to such a variety of individuals, places, and life experiences.'
Addressing Cost and Safety Concerns
According to Rightmove statistics, the average property price in London currently stands at £654,969, more than double the national average. Renting presents similar challenges, with Trust For London data indicating Londoners must allocate 52% of their average income to rent a one-bedroom home. Starting a family typically requires additional bedrooms, clarifying why many prospective parents opt to relocate.
Regarding crime, incidents are not absent. Over 117,000 phone thefts were reported in 2024, while shoplifting surged by a startling 54% from 58,000 to 90,000 incidents between 2023 and 2024—significantly higher than the 15% increase across the rest of England during that period.
Nevertheless, the perception that London is less safe for children than other locations is somewhat unfounded. Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley previously stated on LBC, 'The homicide rate in London is lower than in Toronto, Paris, Brussels, and Berlin. This is a safe city. I will not pretend it is perfect, but it is a safe city.'
In certain aspects, safety is improving. The Met's latest figures, released last month, show ninety-seven homicides in the capital during 2025, compared to 109 in 2024, representing an 11% reduction.
Abundant Family Amenities
London offers no shortage of child-friendly activities. Major institutions like the Natural History Museum, the V&A, the Science Museum, and the Imperial War Museum provide free entry. Additionally, the city features extensive greenery, including Hampstead Heath, Peckham Rye, Brockwell Park, and Regent's Park, among numerous others.
