In a case that reads like a bizarre crime thriller, a £14,250 Fabergé egg has been recovered by police after being swallowed by a suspected thief. The jewel, known as the Octopussy egg, was reportedly ingested six days prior to its recovery, which officers confirmed happened 'naturally' without the need for medical intervention.
The Audacious Theft and Unusual Recovery
The incident unfolded at Partridge Jewellers in Auckland on 28 November. A 32-year-old man was arrested after he allegedly consumed the precious item in an attempt to steal it. The egg is one of only 50 in the world, crafted from gold and adorned with 183 diamonds and two sapphires. Its intricate design features an inner surprise: an 18-carat gold octopus with diamond-studded suckers and eyes, which inspired its name and the James Bond film 'Octopussy'.
Images released show the egg, held in a gloved hand and wrapped in tissue, after its unusual journey. A police spokesperson stated plainly: 'Medical intervention was not required.' To ensure the egg's safe recovery, officers maintained a round-the-clock watch on the man while he was in custody. This vigilance was to prevent the artefact from being destroyed or, remarkably, swallowed a second time.
Remarkable Resilience of a Priceless Piece
Perhaps the most astonishing detail is that the egg's value remained completely undiminished despite its week-long passage through the man's digestive system. The pricetag held firm at £14,250. Police emphasised their duty of care earlier this week, noting: 'Given this man is in police custody, we have a duty of care to continue monitoring him given the circumstances of what has occurred.'
According to Radio NZ, Partridge Jewellers confirmed the locket would be returned to the renowned House of Fabergé. The luxury brand was founded in Russia over two centuries ago and remains synonymous with exquisite craftsmanship.
Further Charges and Ongoing Case
The man now faces a charge of theft for the egg incident. However, reports from the BBC indicate further allegations. He has also been charged with stealing an iPad from the same store. In a separate incident the following day, he is accused of making off with cat litter and flea control products from a private address.
This extraordinary story highlights not only the lengths to which some will go to commit a crime but also the unexpected duties that fall to police in preserving evidence and ensuring a suspect's welfare, no matter how unusual the circumstances.
