Karl Lagerfeld's Cat Choupette Yet to Receive Inheritance, Caretaker Says
Lagerfeld's Cat Choupette Still Awaiting Inheritance

When Karl Lagerfeld passed away in 2019, headlines speculated that his beloved cat Choupette would inherit millions, with figures as high as £150 million being reported. Additionally, it was understood that the Chanel visionary set aside £1.5 million for his pet to ensure she continued to live in luxury. However, it has now been revealed that the blue-eyed Birman cat, often called the richest in the world, has not received any of the promised funds.

Caretaker Speaks Out

Choupette is currently in the care of Françoise Caçote, Lagerfeld's former housemaid, who has been the cat's primary caretaker and companion. In an interview with The Atlantic, Caçote disclosed that they have received 'absolutely nothing' from the estate. She explained, 'I have had to hire expensive lawyers to claim the inheritance in my name and ensure that Karl's wishes are properly respected.'

Caçote emphasized her commitment to Choupette's well-being, stating, 'While things are being sorted out, I'm doing my best to honour his wishes, especially that Choupette wants for nothing. That's my top priority.' To support the cat's needs, she works part-time. 'In addition to caring for her, I work part-time to support her. She receives all the love, attention, and care she needs.'

Living Up to Expectations

Caçote acknowledged the pressure of caring for such a famous feline. 'I'm always afraid of being judged,' she said. 'What I do know is that Choupette is happy at home, and that's the main thing.' At the time of the interview, Choupette was reportedly 'taking a quiet nap.'

Choupette's Story

Lagerfeld welcomed Choupette into his life in August 2011. She originally belonged to model Baptiste Giabiconi, who asked Lagerfeld to cat-sit while traveling. When Giabiconi returned, Lagerfeld refused to give her back, admitting he had fallen in love. In 2013, he told CNN that if it were legal, he would marry the cat. 'There is no marriage, yet, for human beings and animals… I never thought that I would fall in love like this with a cat,' he said.

The situation remains unresolved, but Caçote remains hopeful: 'We remain hopeful that the situation will one day be resolved peacefully.'
