Nursery Worker Vincent Chan Faces Life Sentence for 17-Year Child Sex Abuse Campaign
Vincent Chan, a 45-year-old paedophile nursery worker, is confronting the possibility of a life sentence for a horrific 17-year campaign of sexual abuse against toddlers and young girls in North London. Chan, who passed vetting checks, worked for nearly seven years at the Bright Horizons nursery in West Hampstead before pleading guilty to the charges, which included attacking children during naptime.
Decades of Predatory Behavior Uncovered
Footage reviewed by the Metropolitan Police during Operation Lanark reveals that Chan's known offending stretches back nearly two decades. He covertly used cameras to upskirt children at another unnamed educational setting in North London between 2007 and 2017. His abuse at Bright Horizons occurred between 2022 and 2024, leading to his arrest in June 2024.
Chan is scheduled to appear at Wood Green Crown Court on Thursday, February 12, where he faces a possible life sentence for all 56 counts. In December last year, he admitted 26 offences against children at a pre-trial hearing, including multiple counts of sexual assault of a child by penetration and possessing over 26,000 indecent images of children. In January, he admitted another 30 offences relating to 16 victims, including 10 children.
Institutional Response and Policy Changes
Bright Horizons stated it was "shocked and appalled" by "this individual's horrific crimes" and has commissioned an independent review of its procedures. Following a local child safeguarding practice review, the Government is now considering making CCTV compulsory in early years settings to prevent similar abuse in the future.
Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford, who led the investigation, emphasized: "Vincent Chan is a dangerous and predatory individual, and the scale of his abhorrent offending is shocking. Chan’s history demonstrates to us that he has sought out positions of trust involving contact with young girls, which allowed him to commit his crimes unchecked for so long."
