UK Passport Fees Experience Significant Increase
The cost of obtaining a new or replacement British passport has risen substantially, with some applicants now facing charges as high as £239.50 for this essential travel document. This price adjustment took effect on April 8, 2026, affecting multiple application categories across the board.
New Passport Fee Structure Explained
Standard adult passport applications for individuals aged 16 and above have increased from £94.50 to £102 when applying online. Paper applications for adults have risen from £107 to £115.50. For children's passports, the online fee has climbed from £61.50 to £66.50, while postal applications increased from £74 to £80.
The Premium Service, which provides one-day processing, has seen the most dramatic increase, jumping from £222 to £239.50. International applications have also been affected, with adult overseas passport fees rising by £8.50 to £116.50 and children's overseas passports increasing by £5.50 to £75.50.
Who Qualifies for Free Passports?
Despite these widespread fee increases, certain individuals remain eligible to obtain British passports completely free of charge. According to official government guidelines, anyone born on or before September 2, 1929, can apply for a new passport or renew an existing one without paying any fees.
These eligible applicants can also utilize the Post Office Check and Send service at no cost and benefit from complimentary secure delivery. However, the government has clarified that fees still apply for urgent passport services or frequent traveller passports, which contain additional pages compared to standard versions.
Application Processing and Eligibility Requirements
HM Passport Office continues to process all British passport applications, with most arriving within approximately three weeks or less. British passports are available to several categories of individuals, including British citizens, British overseas territories citizens, British overseas citizens, British subjects, British nationals (overseas), and British protected persons.
The vast majority of applicants must pay the updated fees for passport services, including documents for children and young people. These price adjustments reflect ongoing administrative costs associated with passport production and security measures.
Passports remain essential documents for UK residents planning international travel, serving as both identification and permission to cross international borders.
