The Met Office has indicated that the current heatwave gripping London will extend into next week, with temperatures not expected to fall below 27°C. The mercury is forecast to peak on Thursday, July 9, reaching 34°C.
UKHSA amber warning remains in place
The UK Health Security Agency's (UKHSA) amber warning, which runs until Sunday, July 12, signals an increased demand on health and social care services. The heat may also affect the workforce's ability to deliver services, and there is a heightened risk of water-related incidents, including cold-water shock and drowning.
Extended hot spell into next week
WX Charts data shows temperatures well above 30°C on most days, with a possibility of returning to 35°C or 36°C. Next Thursday, July 16, could see temperatures around 29°C. Deputy Chief Forecaster Tom Crabtree commented: “Many people will understandably want to know how long the current heatwave is likely to last. While temperatures are expected to ease across southeast England through the weekend and into next week, it won't be a straightforward end to the warm weather.”
Forecast details for London
- Thursday, July 9: High of 34°C, sunny
- Friday, July 10: High of 32°C, sunny
- Saturday, July 11: High of 30°C, sunny
- Sunday, July 12: High of 29°C, sunny
- Monday, July 13: High of 28°C, sunny
- Tuesday, July 14: High of 27°C, sunny
- Wednesday, July 15: High of 29°C, sunny
Crabtree added: “High pressure is expected to remain in charge through much of next week, but it will gradually migrate northwards. This means that an easterly wind will become established in the south, and the focus for the hottest conditions will migrate towards the southwest. As a result, some places that have seen the highest temperatures during recent weeks will begin to cool. It will however, remain very warm – especially in the southwest – and heatwave thresholds may continue to be met in places.”
Broader UK outlook
The overall signal is for continued fine, dry and very warm weather at times for many parts of the UK into next week, though there is a chance of thunderstorms spreading into parts of the south and southwest.
