Two More Teenagers Arrested Following Fatal Shooting of 14-Year-Old in South London
Two additional teenagers have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a 14-year-old schoolboy was shot dead in south London. The victim, identified as Eghosa Ogbebor, tragically lost his life on Thursday afternoon, prompting a major murder investigation by the Metropolitan Police.
Escalating Police Investigation and Multiple Arrests
The investigation initially led to three arrests on Friday, involving two boys aged 14 and 16, along with an 18-year-old man. On Saturday, authorities announced the detention of two more individuals: a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, both currently in police custody. Additionally, a 46-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remains detained.
Police were called to a residential street near Woolwich Dockyard train station at approximately 3:40 PM on Thursday following reports of a shooting. Paramedics discovered Eghosa with fatal injuries, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. His family has been notified and is receiving support from specialist officers.
Tributes and Community Impact
Eghosa has been remembered in tributes as a Drill rapper who performed under the name Y.Risky. It is believed he recorded a song at school just days before his untimely death. Pictures from Thursday showed flowers laid on the road in his memory, a poignant gesture that Mayor Sadiq Khan described as "appalling."
Khan expressed his condolences, stating, "My thoughts are with the family, friends and wider community in Woolwich following the appalling fatal shooting of 14-year-old boy. There is absolutely no place for this heartbreaking violence."
Police Statements and Community Appeals
DCI Lucie Card, leading the investigation, emphasized the ongoing efforts of her team. "Our team of dedicated detectives are continuing enquiries to investigate Eghosa’s tragic death," she said. "Residents in Woolwich may have noticed a large amount of police activity last night, as officers arrested three further people in connection with the investigation."
Card acknowledged the community's concern, noting that an increased police presence will remain in the area. She urged anyone with information or who witnessed suspicious activity to come forward and assist with the investigation.
Broader Context of Youth Violence in London
This incident marks the second fatal shooting in London in less than a week, following the death of 26-year-old Nahom Medhanie, who was shot while sitting in a car near Euston station the previous Saturday. Matthew Pennycook, MP for Greenwich and Woolwich, highlighted the devastating impact, stating the killing "sees the promise of another life senselessly extinguished. It leaves yet another family grief-stricken and a community further traumatised."
Pennycook added a stern warning: "We cannot allow serious youth violence to be normalised." Authorities are urging anyone with information or footage to contact police on 101 as the investigation continues to unfold.
