Three Palestinians Killed in West Bank Village Amid Escalating Violence
Israeli settlers and soldiers killed three Palestinians in the West Bank village of Abu Falah near Ramallah on Saturday night, marking the third deadly attack in a week as Israeli violence surges across the occupied territory. This incident occurred while global attention is largely diverted by the war between Israel and Iran, highlighting a pattern of intensified aggression under the cover of regional conflict.
Details of the Abu Falah Attack
The violence erupted when Palestinians from Abu Falah attempted to stop a group of masked Israelis from vandalizing olive trees outside the town. According to relatives and neighbors, dozens of armed settlers later descended on the village, resulting in the deaths of Thaer Faruq Hamayel, 30, and Fara Jawdat Hamayel, 57, both shot in the head. Israeli security forces who arrived at the scene fired military-grade tear gas into the narrow streets, leading to the death of Muhammad Hassan, 54, a father of four, from inhalation.
Amin Shuman, a member of the local council in Abu Falah, expressed grave concern, stating, "What is happening now is extremely dangerous. The world is preoccupied with the war with Iran, while settlers, protected by the Israeli army, continue to attack innocent civilians. No one is being held accountable." Hamid Hamayel, a cousin of Thaer, added that settlers arrived armed with sticks, slingshots, pistols, and M16 rifles, with the apparent goal of confiscating land and forcing residents to leave.
Broader Context of Escalating Violence
Since Israel and the U.S. launched a new war on Iran at the end of February, Israeli settlers have shot dead five civilians during invasions of Palestinian olive groves, villages, and grazing land. A sixth person died from inhaling military-grade tear gas used by the Israeli army. The escalating regional conflict has shifted diplomatic, media, and political attention away from occupied Palestine, even as Israeli authorities imposed a new blockade on Gaza and implemented sweeping movement restrictions across the West Bank.
Israel-based rights group B’tselem warned this week, "Under the cover of war, the cooperation between the military and Israeli settler militias is deepening the ethnic cleansing of the West Bank." The group documented settlers deliberately grazing livestock in Palestinian cultivated fields, destroying crops and stored food, stealing livestock, and vandalizing solar panels and water tanks, often using bulldozers to raze privately owned land.
Other Recent Incidents in the West Bank
Earlier in the week, two deadly shootings by Israeli settler reservists wearing army uniforms resulted in three Palestinian deaths and one critical injury. On Monday, two brothers were killed in Qaryut village when they tried to prevent settlers from damaging olive trees. Muhammad Taha Muammar, 52, was shot in the head, and Fahim Taha Muammar, 48, was shot in his lower body. The Israeli military arrested over 20 Palestinians from the village and imposed road closures that delayed ambulances for more than an hour.
On Saturday, another killing occurred in Wadi a-Rakhim village in the south Hebron Hills, where settlers drove livestock into Palestinian land and opened fire at point-blank range, killing Amir Muhammad Shanaran, 28, and critically injuring his brother Khaled. Footage shared by B’tselem shows an Israeli in army uniform holding an assault rifle near the collapsed victim.
Military Response and Accountability
Maj Gen Avi Bluth, the Israeli military commander for the occupied West Bank, described the Abu Falah shootings as an "unacceptable incident" and promised "zero tolerance for civilians who take the law into their own hand," vowing to bring those responsible to justice. However, he has not commented directly on the earlier shootings by settler reservists. The Israeli military stated it is treating these attacks with "utmost severity" and is investigating, but critics argue that accountability remains lacking.
Breaking the Silence, an advocacy group for former Israeli soldiers, reported that settlers are carrying out an average of 10 attacks daily across the West Bank under the cover of war. The group emphasized, "As often happens when the media attention shifts, Israel seized the moment to intensify its attacks against Palestinians. As missiles fly and Iran again dominates the headlines, don’t look away from the ethnic cleansing unfolding in the West Bank."
Since October 2023, violent settlers have used Israel’s army as a vehicle to escalate their campaign against Palestinians, with reserve units from settlements functioning as vigilante militias, according to Israeli soldiers, activists, and the United Nations. This surge in violence underscores the urgent need for international attention and action to address the ongoing crisis in the region.
