Judge Lifts Anonymity Order on Teenager Who Stabbed Schoolboy to Death

A 15-year-old youth who stabbed 12-year-old Leo Ross to death in a random and cowardly attack as the schoolboy walked home through a Birmingham park can now be publicly named as Kian Moulton. The decision to unmask the teenager was made by Judge Mr Justice Choudhury, who granted a media application citing the significant public interest in the case.

A Fatal Encounter in Shire Country Park

Leo Ross was walking through Shire Country Park in the Hall Green area of Birmingham in January when Moulton launched the unprovoked assault. The attacker inflicted a single, fatal wound to Leo's stomach. Shockingly, Moulton then loitered at the scene to watch the aftermath, reportedly to derive maximum enjoyment from his actions. He even spoke with police officers, presenting himself as a potential witness while paramedics desperately tried to save the schoolboy's life just yards away.

Life Sentence and a Minimum of 13 Years

Earlier this week, Kian Moulton was sentenced to life imprisonment. The judge ordered that he must serve a minimum term of 13 years before he can even be considered for release. In sentencing, Mr Justice Choudhury emphasized the horrific nature of the crime, stating that most right-thinking people would struggle to comprehend Moulton's actions over the course of just three days.

A Spree of Violence Against the Vulnerable

The court heard that in the days leading up to Leo's killing, Moulton engaged in a series of brutal attacks on lone elderly women in the same park. His spree included:

  • Shoving an 82-year-old woman into a river, threatening to kill her, and beating her with her own walking stick, causing a broken nose, black eyes, and fractures.
  • Targeting a 72-year-old woman the next day, pushing or striking her from behind, leaving her unconscious with a profusely bleeding head wound and broken ribs.
  • Pushing a 79-year-old woman to the ground from behind just half an hour before he murdered Leo, then turning and smiling at her.

Judge Choudhury told Moulton he had deliberately chosen victims who were weaker and smaller than himself, labeling his actions as profoundly cowardly. The judge expressed hope that the teenager would come to realize the true horror of his conduct.

Public Interest in Understanding the Motive

In granting the application to name Moulton, the senior judge noted that the public would rightly want to know what could have led a child to commit such acts. The lifting of the anonymity order allows for full public scrutiny of a case that has shocked the community and raised serious questions about youth violence and random attacks in public spaces.
