Sunbury Man Sentenced for Prolonged Domestic Abuse Campaign
A violent offender from Sunbury-on-Thames has been imprisoned after subjecting his partner to a harrowing five-year period of physical and psychological torment. Sean Brady, aged 40, was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court on Friday, February 6, receiving a prison term of two years and five months for his crimes.
Details of the Abuse and Arrest
The victim-survivor, whose identity remains protected, contacted police late on March 31 last year, reporting that her ex-partner had climbed onto her car and caused damage. Prior to this incident, Brady had sent a series of threatening and abusive messages. When officers arrived, the woman courageously disclosed the extensive abuse she had endured over five years, detailing how Brady was controlling and coercive, often escalating situations to violence.
During this period, she was assaulted multiple times, including an occasion where Brady threw items at her and physically attacked her. Brady was tracked down and arrested two days after the car incident, leading to his prosecution.
Court Proceedings and Police Response
Brady pleaded guilty to charges of controlling and coercive behavior (CCB), strangulation, and criminal damage. Detective Constable Charlotte Bell of Surrey Police commended the victim-survivor for her strength in coming forward. "I would like to recognize the victim-survivor's strength in disclosing Brady's history and behavior to our officers after she made that call in March," DC Bell stated. "I also want to thank her for her trust in Surrey Police and bravery for supporting our investigation."
She emphasized the severe impact of such abuse, noting that controlling and coercive behavior is designed to exert power over another person's daily life through tactics like isolation and intimidation, which can profoundly affect physical and mental well-being. DC Bell urged anyone experiencing similar patterns to report it to police, assuring that they will be supported from the outset.
Broader Implications and Community Awareness
This case highlights the ongoing issue of domestic abuse in communities, underscoring the importance of victim support and legal accountability. The sentencing serves as a reminder of the serious consequences for perpetrators of such crimes, while police continue to encourage reporting to help prevent further incidents.
