Nicola Sturgeon's Farewell Speech: Urges MSPs to Bridge Divides
Sturgeon's Farewell: Advice to MSPs on Unity and Service

Nicola Sturgeon Bows Out with Parting Wisdom for Scottish Parliament

Nicola Sturgeon, the former first minister of Scotland and a dominant figure in nationalist politics for nearly a decade, has concluded her tenure with a heartfelt valedictory address. In her final appearance at Holyrood, she expressed mixed emotions about departing after 27 years as a Member of the Scottish Parliament, a role she described as a profound privilege.

A Storied Career Marked by Highs and Lows

Elected to the newly devolved parliament in 1999, Sturgeon served as Scotland's first minister from 2014 until her resignation in 2023. Her exit coincided with a financial scandal involving the Scottish National Party (SNP), though she was later cleared of wrongdoing. Reflecting on her journey, she noted, "I've been here for 27 years—that's almost exactly half my life. So even though the time is right to move on, I won't pretend that leaving isn't a wrench. It is."

Initially the political protege of Alex Salmond, she acted as his deputy from 2007 before succeeding him as first minister after the SNP's loss in the 2014 independence referendum. Their relationship soured dramatically amid sexual harassment allegations against Salmond, who was acquitted, leading to a rift that saw her excluded from his funeral in 2024.

Political Triumphs and Personal Challenges

Sturgeon's career peak came in 2015 when she led the SNP to a landslide victory in Scotland during the UK general election, securing 56 of 59 Westminster seats. Renowned as a formidable campaigner, she governed her party with strict discipline, supported by her husband, Peter Murrell, the SNP's chief executive. However, their personal and professional lives faced turmoil when Police Scotland initiated a fraud inquiry in 2023 over alleged misuse of party funds for a £125,000 camper van and luxury items. The couple, who married in 2010, separated in 2025, with Murrell charged with embezzlement and awaiting trial.

Farewell Advice: Emphasizing Unity and Real-World Service

In an emotional speech where she wiped away tears, Sturgeon observed that politics has transformed significantly, often not for the better, and accepted partial responsibility for this shift. She urged MSPs to cherish the parliament and avoid taking it for granted. Despite her reputation for tribal loyalty during her SNP leadership, she advocated for cross-party camaraderie, stating, "Opponents need not be enemies."

Her parting counsel included:

  • Think independently: "No matter the depths of your loyalty to your own political tribe, don't forget to think for yourself."
  • Maintain perspective: "If everything is a scandal or an outrage, nothing is. And then those who deserve to be held to account, they get off scot-free."
  • Limit social media influence: With over 1.3 million followers on X, nearly 450,000 on Facebook, and 130,000 on Instagram, she warned, "Don't live life on social media. Use it, but never forget there is a real world out there and it is the people in it you are here to serve."

Concluding her remarks, she reminded MSPs of the rare privilege of serving in the chamber, a sentiment she held dear throughout her 27-year tenure.
