Robert Reich Urges Allies: Don't Confuse Trump with the American People
Reich to Allies: Don't Confuse Trump with Americans

In a powerful appeal to America's global partners, former US Secretary of Labor Robert Reich has issued a stark message: "Please don't confuse our president with us." The prominent public policy professor and Guardian columnist emphasizes that Donald Trump stands alone in his approach to international relations, while the majority of Americans remain committed to traditional alliances and global cooperation.

The Isolation of a President

Reich draws a crucial distinction between the current occupant of the Oval Office and the American people as a whole. "Donald Trump is alone," he states unequivocally. "That's different from the United States being alone." The columnist argues that Trump's recent call for assistance in clearing the Strait of Hormuz was rebuffed by traditional allies not because they rejected America, but because they rejected the unilateral approach of a president who failed to consult them before launching military action.

International Rejection of Trump's Approach

The response from key allies has been notably consistent in its rejection of Trump's methods. French President Emmanuel Macron declared his country "will never take part in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz in the current context." Canada's Foreign Minister Anita Anand revealed that Canada "was not consulted prior to the offensive operation" and has no intention of participating. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has similarly stated the UK would not be "drawn into the wider war."

Trump's reaction to this diplomatic pushback has been characteristically explosive. In a social media outburst, he declared: "We no longer 'need,' or desire, the NATO Countries' assistance – WE NEVER DID! Likewise, Japan, Australia, or South Korea. In fact, speaking as President of the United States of America, by far the Most Powerful Country Anywhere in the World, WE DO NOT NEED THE HELP OF ANYONE!"

The True Voice of America

Reich directly addresses America's allies with a contrasting message: "In point of fact, we the people of the United States do need your help." He outlines critical areas where international cooperation remains essential, including combating the global climate crisis, preventing future pandemics, countering international criminal networks trafficking people and dangerous substances, fighting global poverty and disease, and safeguarding democratic freedoms against authoritarian threats.

A Plea for Understanding

The former cabinet member makes an emotional appeal to citizens of other democracies, asking them to understand that "the vast majority of us – the people of the United States – are embarrassed and offended by the oaf who now occupies the highest office in the United States." Reich emphasizes that Trump "does not speak for us" and that his decisions are not made with American welfare in mind, let alone global wellbeing.

"We are trying our best to resist him, contain him, protest against him and remove him from office as quickly as we possibly can," Reich assures international partners. His closing message is one of gratitude: "Thank you for your patience."

Robert Reich, who served as US Secretary of Labor under President Bill Clinton, currently serves as Professor of Public Policy Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. His new book, "Coming Up Short: A Memoir of My America," is now available in both the United States and United Kingdom.
