British Transport Police (BTP) have launched a public appeal to trace a woman described as 'aggressive and threatening' following an assault on a young girl at a busy South London railway station.
Assault at morning rush hour
The incident occurred during the morning commute at approximately 8am on Thursday, November 20. According to officers, the attack took place as a woman and a primary school-age girl were passing through the ticket barriers at Balham railway station.
The woman is reported to have struck the child around the side of her head with such force that the girl was knocked into a wall. The assault was witnessed by other commuters, two of whom challenged the woman's actions.
'Aggressive and threatening' behaviour
When confronted by the two bystanders, the woman allegedly became 'aggressive and threatening' towards them. Following the altercation, both the woman and the child left the station, and their current whereabouts are unknown.
BTP have released a CCTV image of a woman they wish to speak to in connection with the assault. They believe she may have information crucial to their ongoing investigation.
Welfare check and witness appeal
A key priority for detectives is to check on the welfare of the young girl involved. Officers are urging the woman in the image, or anyone who recognises her, to make contact to help ensure the child's safety.
Police are also appealing to the two commuters who intervened, and any other witnesses, to come forward with information.
Anyone with information should text BTP on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference number 117 of 20 November. Information can also be given anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
