Peru Extends Presidential Voting to Monday Amid Polling Station Chaos
In an unprecedented move, Peru's electoral agency ONPE announced on Sunday night that voting for the presidential election would be extended by an extra day into Monday. This decision came after widespread disruptions at polling stations, including a lack of ballot papers and defective computers, which prevented tens of thousands of Peruvians from casting their ballots on the scheduled election day.
Technical Issues and Voter Frustration
Authorities reported that 52,000 people would be allowed to vote on Monday, primarily affecting 15 polling stations in southern Lima that had cancelled voting due to technical problems. Additionally, Peru's foreign ministry stated that several thousand voters living in the US cities of Paterson, New Jersey, and Orlando, Florida, would also have the opportunity to vote on Monday. The chaos led to scenes of frustration, such as at a polling station in Lima's Miraflores district, where voters chanted "We want to vote!" after delays caused by issues like printers running out of ink.
Political Context and Early Results
The election features a contentious race among candidates including two former Lima mayors, the daughter of an autocrat, and a comedian, all vying to become Peru's ninth president in a decade marked by intense political instability and corruption scandals. Exit polls, partial results, and independent tallies indicate that Keiko Fujimori, a four-time presidential candidate, is currently in the lead. However, she falls well short of the 50% threshold needed to win outright, and it remains unclear who she will face in a potential second round.
Accusations and Mandatory Voting
The technical problems occurred amid unsubstantiated accusations of fraud and calls from candidates to extend voting into the night. Voting is mandatory for Peruvians aged 18 to 70, with failure to vote carrying a fine of up to $32. ONPE has clarified that no official first-round result will be available until after the additional voting concludes on Monday, leaving the nation in suspense over the outcome of this critical election.
